Hello everyone new member here i have recently acquired an 2006 1.9tdi from my uncle he thought wasn't running but i have found it does start just takes about 15 seconds of cranking then starts and runs ok if i turn it off it will start again but intermittently will take a quite a few cranks it has started on the button a few times but mostly takes a few turns

Over a month or so ago it cut out on him and it had a new in tank pump and fuel filte which cured it until 2 weeks ago where it has sat

 

One last point the yellow oil light has came on but the oil level is fine

i know this is an old post, but I’m wondering if you managed to resolve the starting issue on your A3?

i have a 2009 1.9 tdi and have a starting issue too, which seems to be very similar to yours. 

Mine takes 15 seconds of cranking to start in the morning, but then once started it’s fine. It will then start straight away for the rest of the day too.

ive had a new battery fitted and the garage has suggested new injectors and someone else has suggested it just could be the 109 Relay which is the next part I’ll change. Just wondering if you had any other suggestions of something that cured yours?

really don’t know where to go from here!

Hello Rob,

Being a but pessimistic, I doubt if you will hear from the original poster via. this thread. It might be worthwhile contacting him by PM.

On to your issue:- 

Does/did the poor starting apply in non-winter weather as well? 

When you say '.....the garage....' - are these diesel specialists? If not, I would certainly recommend you spend your investigation money with a trusted local diesel specialist rather than an ordinary local garage. Local taxi drivers are often a good source of recommendations for diesel specialists. 

Relay? It could be a fuel pump relay, but I would think this is an assumption rather than a known issue. 

'Really don't know where to go from here'. If the issue is a cold weather problem, then it could (just could) be glow plugs.These - and the associated wiring can be checked. Injectors? Again it could be, and again these can be assessed by a basic leak-back test. Your wallet needs to hope it isn't an injector issue! 

Do you get smoke and an excessive smell of diesel when it does start? 

Hopefully the above will be of some help, but you really need to invest in an hour or so labour at the specialists, which should save you money in the long run.

thanks for your reply.

yes, it’s only recently started happening and only seems to do it in the morning when it’s been left over night. Once it’s started, then it is fine for the rest of the day.

The garage I use are not diesel specialist, just someone who I have used and trusted for years, but am thinking of going to an Audi/vw specialist, but will also look at a diesel specialist too.

The relay was suggested but someone as they had spent a fortune on different parts and they never cured the issue, then they changed the relay for next to nothing and it sorted it out! I am hoping this is all it will be but I am probably dreaming!!!

I’ll talk to the garage in the new year to see exactly what tests they have done, but their next suggestion was injectors, however when they told me the price I want to rule out other possibilities first as they said they cannot be 100% that the injectors are the issue.

Theres no smoke or diesel smell. Once the car starts, it drives perfectly (which is why I am clinging on to hope that it’s not injectors, as I would have thought they would cause issues whilst driving, though I am no mechanic!)

As Gareth said, get it professionally tested if you can't be certain of precisely where the fault is. The trial and error method of replacing parts almost at random until the problem is resolved will cost a fortune. Once you have a definite cause you can decide whether to repair it yourself or get it done for you.

Hi sorry just seen these notifications i traced ny issue back to the mechanic who replaced the in tank fuel pump he had put the fuel line's on the wrong way round
