Engine temperature issue

Coolant warning msg came up on dash temp was 125 wat CD be reason cooled dwn when I slowed to 50 mph never happened b4 had car 4 2 years n only 40000 miles

id recommend a diagnostic check to be carried out to see what fault codes flag up.

obviously it could be the thermostat but I'm wondering if it's something else. Ie a leak. What's the coolant level?
