tealsyd Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 Has anyone experienced plastic housing breaking up allowing seal to escape and coolant to leak, and requiring a whole new pump assembly.
Magnet Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 Hello David, Could you give us a little more detail about the age and make (original - aftermarket?) of this pump, if it is known to you. Kind regards, Gareth.

Kind regards, Gareth. Gareth The engine is a 2.0L petrol turbo (197 bhp) ,with chain driven cams ( current type ). The vehicle is 2009MY and the Water Pump was original it had only done 68,000 miles. The plastic water pump housing had broken along the top edge, allowing the seal between cylinder block and pump to blow out and empty the coolant, Hope this is enough information Kind regards David

Magnet Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 Thanks David. Interesting that it's an original pump which has failed, rather than an aftermarket. It would indeed be helpful to know if this had been a source of issues for others, so owners can keep on eye on theirs for perhaps signs of pink coolant stains before the pump gets to the stage where it allows total coolant leaks. I trust you were able to detect an overheating before all the coolant was lost. Kind regards, Gareth. p.s. Without any experience of this pump set up, I wonder if 10 year old plastic remains generally serviceable for this application - obviously not in your case.
tealsyd Posted October 2, 2018 Author Posted October 2, 2018 Gareth No garages I have talked to have experienced this problem, However my engine is an early example of the EA888 design. I was lucky that the seal leaked very close to home and the engine stopped before the cooling system was affected, i.e only the reservoir was emptied indicated by the level light. David
