You haven't given us much information to work on Lynne.

Have you checked the battery connections? Did the central locking unlock from the fob? Do the sidelights work? Do any other electrical systems work? That sort of data will help to locate the fault which could be anything from a dying battery to simple blown fuse.

i brought out a mechanic to the house and he had a check over off it checked fuses under the bonnet  i assume battery connections etc but nothing. the car opened with the central locking and lights were on ie side lights radio etc was working. but nothing on middle dash ie miles temp etc . once i locked car and opened and tried start went for 2 3 secs and then died then tried again and just turning over.

Thanks for the information Lynne. As other electrical systems work and the battery has enough power to turn over the engine, it looks as if the engine control unit (ECU) is faulty. That's a specialised job and beyond my competence. I suggest a car electrician should be your next port of call. If there are none at hand you may have to resort to an Audi main dealer, though I have not been impressed by what I read on this forum about their diagnostic abilities.

P.S. As the problem appeared shortly after the car service and MOT I wonder if the mechanic has dislodged an electrical connection.

i have had car towed to a garage and they have said it is the clocks (dash). so i have had this removed and it has been sent to ecu testing for it to be tested.

That's hard luck, and potentially expensive. I have heard of faults in the dashboard instruments causing this sort of problem. I also vaguely recall reading of a company that will rebuild or repair the dashboard at a fraction of the cost of a new one. Unfortunately I don't remember the name or location of the company. Perhaps an internet search will help you find someone local to you.

I had the same problem, but I have jumped the gun a bit.

I have 8P1 2009 A3 Hatchback·1.9 TDI Hatchback·1896ccm 105HP 77KW and the battery was beginning to give up the ghost so I purchased a new battery.

The old battery measured 12.27v (dead) the new battery 12.45 and then I started the car, no problems.

Then all the warning lights on the dash came on :- glow plug light, handbrake, seat belt light, I'm still moving at this stage I just could not understand it.

Got out of the car locked it and went and did some more shopping, came back unlocked the car started it up and glow plugs, handbrake, seat belt, etc came on but this time no speedo or rev counter, now I really am beginning to get worried in case it just died and I'm nowhere near home, but I made it home without a problem.

Got on the T'inernet and started searching and found all sorts of various answers.

I then thought well if the car is in the driveway I am not going to be caught out by non running etc. so I unlocked the car with the key fob and turned the key and waited expectantly and it started up and the glow plug light, handbrake, seat belt light and rev counter all working as normal so I decided to take it for a short drive. I clicked in my seat belt the light went out, this further impressed me, drove out of my driveway and up to the top of my road 136m turned round and back speedo came on and stayed on. Parked in my driveway and could not believe my luck.

I spoke to a friend of mine and he told me that just by starting the car again the ECU will have reset itself.

Happy days
