Hi,

my RS4 B8 has 80,000 miles on the clock.  It has recently had a high pitched whine or screech develop in the engine compartment.  My local independent  Audi garage who specialises in S and RS  Audi’s had it overnight for a diagnosis but was unable to define what it is.  They speculated unsurely that it might be the air con pump, but clearly didn’t know for sure.  Although they made a suspension change on the car earlier this year and I am pleased with that, my confidence in them has been a bit shaken now.   I know I have not provided much info here, so please fire away with any questions you might have.    Many thanks, Rosanne.

Any chance of posting a video/audio of the noise,

and the circumstances under which it occurs

it may help us to diagnose.

Sorry for the delay in replying.  We’ve been badly affected by Covid 19.  Your idea is good.I will see what I can do.  Thanks.

Hi could they not remove the belt that drives the aircon pump to see if that cures the noise.

They didn’t say if they’d tried that. I will get them to do it.  Thanks.

Hello Steve,

If indeed they haven’t tried that, then I would be seriously looking for another garage!

You don’t tell us:-

Engine rev. associated? Only when the car is moving? Being constructively critical, you are not giving us much to go on.

Kind regards,

Gareth.

Hi Gareth, luckily I have two Audi specialists locally, plus a main dealer .   You are absolutely right, I haven’t given much information. This is because I didn’t know what to say other than what I have done so already.  My hope was to prompt questions from people who know more than I do.  You, for example, have done just that, i.e is it only when the car is moving ?  As it happens, my wife uses this car, which has not been driven for a couple of months due to the fault and lockdown, so she can’t remember.

I've just started it and will let it run for ten minutes to see if the screech develops whilst the car is parked for that length of time. Personally, I seem to recall that once the screech commences during driving, it then continues whilst parked.   It’s now ten minutes later.  The screech commenced five minutes ago whilst the car was parked.   It is a loud and high pitched screech.  Thanks for your response.   I’d be very grateful if it were to continue.    Cheers, Steve.

Hello Steve,

Slipping belt? - auxiliary one?

Thanks for the additional detail - it really does help. Information is king when anyone is trying to diagnose anything at a distance and without access to the vehicle.

Kind regards,

Gareth.

p.s. Not a fan of this, but you can get spray on belt anti squeal. It might be helpful as a test.

By the way, to those of you who are trying to help me with the screech from my B8, it is a 2016 model.  The 2006 was an earlier car.

Thanks.

Hi Gareth,     Thanks for your very helpful suggestion.  I had no idea that such sprays we’re available, I shall certainly get some.

The purpose of my original request for help is really just to brainstorm, so ideally I might find a solution, or alternatively I get enough ideas to talk knowledgeably with the the garage , thus permitting me not to be an idiot ripe for exploiting.
Cheers, Steve
