UnknownVirus Posted May 17, 2020 Posted May 17, 2020 Hi guys, it's been a long time since I posted but have made a lot of progress since I last posted. Very interesting post must read!! The last time I posted, my S8 had not been started in 10 years, with under 5000miles on the clock, the car had been sitting for a very long time. I Had replaced the steering column and couldn't get the column coded. Bought Odis software and a vas5054 and after countless hours I successfully coded the column. HOOORAY.. 6 MNTHS later. And now my car starts on the button. 1. I drained the oil 2 -3 months ago and found water , about a litre of water came out then oil started pouring out.. I changed the filter put fresh oil in and started it. Sounded sweet but was smoking due to the Marvels mystery oil piston soak I had done previously. ( in my first post) Now 2 mnths on and having started the car over 10 times leaving it running for hours on end to warm up everything ( I still havent driven it). I decided to remove the sump and clean the oil pick up. This is what I've found. Sludge in the bottom of oil pan. Lots of it. Luckily it only stayed at the bottom of the pan ( well I hope it has.) The oil pick up pipe was blocked 99%. 20200512_180104.mp4

Sump after cleaning I also took a snap of the engine bottom end, looks very clean in my opinion. I installed the oil strainer and sump pan with the help of a workshop manuals from www.cardiagn.com. awesome site . Sealed the pan using loctite 5980 black silicone and filled her up with quantum 5w30 from the audi parts dealership (TPS) 20 litres of oil cost me 70ish pounds not bad I must say I also removed the rocker cover to check for and sludge in the top end which luckily looked amazingly clean. And while I was at it I thought I'd remove the top part of the inlet manifold to see what state the inlet flaps were. Having read these cars suffer from carbon build up and broken flaps. Which also looked brand new , luckily. So now the car has been put back together and I have filled her up over 10 litres with a fresh filter new oil, cleaned pickup pipe I am going to start her in the next day or so. I'm planning to run her for a hour , then Add Forte Advanced formula engine flush in after the hour and let her idle with the flush information 30 mins or so. Then drain off the oil (I know its such a waste but I'm very fussy). Remove the pan once more, clean the pickup pipe and seal it up again. Then put in some fresh oil with a filter, drive for 500 miles and drain and fill again without removal of the sump. So my main concern after doing this is. SHOULD I USE A ENGINE FLUSH and what would be the best oil to put in after the flush. I hope I've covered everything and will definitely be posting up soon with my experience Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Magnet Posted May 17, 2020 Posted May 17, 2020 Personally, I would not be adding any flushing oil, in view of what you have already done with cleaning the sump etc. Quantum 5w 30 Longlife 3 is a fully synthetic oil and has adequate amounts of detergents which will both clean the engine and ensure the oil retains the correct lubricating properties. If this were mine, I would now be doing as you propose - but without the flushing additive. If you drain this off after an hour’s running then I feel you have then conducted an over-kill maintenance on the engine lubrication side. Since you are now going to need an extra 20 litres over the next 500 miles, have you looked on eBay for sellers of Quantum Longlife oil at probably more attractive prices than you have had to date - and delivered to your door. Not sure what filters you are using, but if not genuine VAG, there are again some good deals on eBay for Mann and Bosch ones. These are the only ones I would use if not using VAG. Been busy, only time I can chip in is weekends, sundays mainly. I feel like a A8 D3 expert now, the amount of bits I've removed and fitted. Lol

I didnt know what was exactly in the pan, of which to my disgust was the sludge. I mean it was quite sticky and I'd imagine its left its mark somewhere in there. For me dropping the sump and cleaning it is probably the least of my worries, I dont mind it as long as I know it's the best I've done even if it means doing it again to get it cleaned out. I've still got 10 or so litres for an extra flush which is why I bought the quantum stuff, not saying it's a bad oil. I Personally am going to put in Motul 300V. At £34 for two litres i'd like to get the insides spotless. Coming back to the engine flush it's something I've had on my mind for a few weeks. Ive just not had the guts to pull the trigger without having some expert advice from the members like yourself. If I did decide to use it would it damage the engine in anyway. And why would the ECP’s own brand?- Motul oil be superior to it? I wouldn’t think it is! I know which one I would, and always have used in our >150K miles A3. Please don’t tell us you are using, or proposing to use, ECP’s Crosslands filters as well. Once a very well respected brand. Now simply a bought out brand name. Re. Flush additive:- I can only repeat that knowing what you have already done, I would not be using any additional aggressive flushing agent, in preference to a refill and drain with Quantum,but your posts comes over as looking for support for your intention of using it, and my feeling is you will use it anyway.
