Tom V10 Posted August 17, 2020 Posted August 17, 2020 Hi,new here. Just bought this beast of a car and looks like inherited this leek! Any mechanics on here carried out this seal repair before? My mechanics asking ,in case there is a slight groove on the crank Shaft end, does anyone make an oil seal at a different depth (repair seal,if such a thing) so as not to seal at the grooved point ?? Look forward to your replies 😊
Magnet Posted August 18, 2020 Posted August 18, 2020 Hello Tom, I would have thought the leak would be very severe if the seal had worn a significant groove in the shaft. I can see where you are coming from regarding a wider/thicker seal, but generally these seals deteriorate and become far less efficient sealers due to the seal hardening. Providing the crankshaft front bearing is not excessively worn - causing the crank to rotate out of true, or indeed have thrust bearing wear which can result in the shaft moving forward and backwards, a new seal should accommodate a small amount of possible rotational wear where the original seal lip sat. Well worthwhile ensuring you buy a good quality replacement seal - even from a main dealer, since the on cost over labour charges would be small. Kind regards, Gareth. p.s. Perhaps the car came from Wales if it came with a leek!
V10 Tom Posted November 2, 2020 Posted November 2, 2020 Hi, and thanks for the reply, sorry taken me so long to reply. Only just got her all back together this weekend, replaced idler/tensioner/waterpump/suspension compressor/all 8x suspensionarms /serpentine belt and the main reason, the crankshaft seal. My mechanic has been great. I still seem to have a leek , (not a Welsh one tho🤔😂). It does look to be coming from the same area !!! He tapped the new seel in using a large socket on the back of the old seel. It did look seated well. Any 💡 ideas?
