I'm told by my garage who has just replaced an injector that I should expect the other injectors to go down pretty soon, So before it comes out the garage they say the next injector has gone down and would I like it replaced too at a cost of £795 fitted

Hi Kev, That's the price for a diagnostic check and to fit an original injector. So I'm told and they are not an Audi dealer

I’m being pedantic here, but diagnosing an issue with one ( in caps) injector - by a non franchised garage - and replacing that one injector with a genuine VAG one = £795? Yes? 

My question would be Robert:- Have you sought a quote for the same work at an Audi dealership? 

If this were mine, I would be seeking out a trusted, recommended, diesel specialist (not an ‘ordinary’ garage) and getting an estimate there. Most diesel specialists are set up to recondition and recalibrate injectors.

Perhaps you could let us know how you get on.

p.s. Recommendations for diesel specialists? Ask around the taxi ranks. These chaps are usually knowledgeable with such services.

Hi Guys, do you reckon the garage owner has a mask and a pair of pistols?, if that was the price of all four fitted I would be thinking thats fair enough, I would not be going anywhere near an Audi dealers as thats the place you go if you are self employed and made to much money you need a stinking great bill for your year end accounts.

Try ringing a company called United Diesels they are on the net and I have used them many times and they are more than fair in as much as they tell you which injector you need then offer the options of refurbished, new, or another manufacturer equivalent then you can buy what you need and go find a garage that will fit for a more reasonable price.

The suggestion of obtaining a quote from a main dealer Steve, was to simply arm Robert with enough information to allow him to compare his garage’s quote with that of a main dealer.

Don't take it personally Gareth it was never aimed at yourself but in reality it would be an exercise in futility as any quote Audi proffered wouldn't even be on the same planet as the quote the guy got from his garage, in fact it might make them look like a viable proposition which from my perspective negates the whole point of these forums, anyone considered the possibility of getting him in touch with Kev as he stated he has some previously enjoyed mint injectors which I am sure that Kev would not be adverse to parting with for a negotiated fee plus postage, that might be his most efficient and cheap route.

Thanks for your input Steve, I will be getting in touch with Kev, the car is now back with me fixed with 2 injectors !

Hi Bob, pleased to help, it may be well worth buying the injectors as at least you will have spare units, the only advice I would give you is if you do end up buying them is to put them in a sealy bag with a light spray of WD40 force as much air out of the bag as you can before storing as these are piezo injectors and they can be a bit twitchy about dirt when stored, other than that I don't think our Kev will see you far wrong I get a feeling that Kev is the same as me if I see a real bargain and it fits my car I will buy it, this policy works from the point of view that due to the accelerated milage I do its always handy to have a consumable part handy, point in case I bought an oxygen sensor a while ago for the Audi it was new in the box for fifty five quid, yesterday my EML came on and scanned up an oxygen sensor fault intermittent apparently, but at least I can change it before it goes terminal, looked at what I could get today and it was nothing Bosch for less than about a hundred quid, therefore my buy was an absolute bargain, and in the final analysis what is this forum for if not to help each other run our cars more cheaply without going into insolvency.

When i got the car back the bill was £985 this was for 2 injectors including labour, 1 scan and pick up and drop off from my house about 2 miles from the garage

Many thanks for the clarification Bob. 
Dare I say, not so bad as £795 for one!? 
Just as a comparison, I paid c£450 about 3 years ago to a local diesel specialist, who removed 2 injectors from a Freelander, had them reconditioned and recalibrated, and then refitted them.

The £ 795 was for 1 new original injector fitted and one new non original that was half the price. The car is running very nice and I'm happy with it again.

Hi lads. Just to bump this topic as it’s the same subject I have a couple of questions about.

Car packed in on me just as I was leaving work after a 12 hour night shift last week. AA guy plugged into my ECU and told me it was the fuel rail sensor. Towed me back to the garage and I walked home. Garage rang me later that day and told me it wasn’t in fact the fuel rail sensor but was actually the injector. Final bill would be £580. They’ve also rang me again this morning to say the near side wheel bearing is gonna need doing as well. Another £220. 
 

My questions are. 1) How could the AA guy plug me into an ECU to give me a diagnosis in black and white yet the garage tell me something-whilst I assume it’s related-it’s not what was originally diagnosed? 
 

2) does the work sound reasonably priced?

3) I appreciate this is an almost impossible question but what do you think the likelihood of the other injectors going in the not too distant future is?

4) Is changing the others something I could have a go at doing myself? I’m an electrician so I’ve got my own tools but do I need anything specific or access to a ramp/lift?

Hi, sorry to point out the obvious but this stinks, if you take into consideration the car has ceased to run that would most possibly be the fuel rail metering sensor packed up, this means that the fuel rail is getting no pressure hence no running, on the flip side the only way injectors would cause that type of occurrence is if all four suffered catastrophic failure simultaneously and the chances of that are about the same as me becoming the next Pope.

What has led me to this conclusion is that I have been using diagnostic software for years and if its a run off between the garages machine and the AA equipment its a no brainer, the AA use Bosch state of the art tough books which I am told by a friend of mine who is a patrolman are about twelve grands worth to the AA new, I once tried to buy one on eBay and fell off bidding when second hand it made five grand at three years old.

Sorry I think the garage is pulling your chain, if it was just one injector you would have had an engine management light up a while ago and pix poor fuel consumption and extremely rough running they don't just pack up and even if it did the thing would still run on three cylinders, the fuel rail sensors are pretty easy to change you won't need a ramp just a suitable large ring spanner, if I were you I would be looking at the old sensors and get the part numbers off and go shopping on eBay thats my usual MO, as for the wheel bearing how the hell would they know if its knackered if you cant drive the car.

Appreciate that reply Steve. I didn’t want to read or hear it but I appreciate  it nonetheless. 
 

Obviously, as we’re all aware, by the time I’m at the garage on a tow truck with a car which won’t run whatsoever I’m essentially a hostage until I pay whatever the garage is telling me! What can I do? Get it towed to a different garage for a 2nd opinion? That’s another £200 notes on top surely!??

Thanks for the advice regarding the rail sensors as well and that’s what I’ll look into. 
 

The juxtaposition of it is though that I’ve taken cars in to this same garage previously (lived in this town for about 3 years now) and never felt like they were lifting my leg.

Hi Gareth its the oldest formula in the book, familiarity breeds contempt, when you present the interlocked rings for their inspection you can almost see their eyes light up, you come across as a bright chap most electricians are, try the following as you are not a hostage but a customer, tell them you will get the bearing done another time but you now require to see a printout of their diagnostic reading and codes then check with the AA what their engineers code reading produced  as he will have had to have submitted a report of the call out if it was a rail sensor as described present this to your garage and demand that they change that part before any others and if possible be there when they change it, you are paying for this so you should get what you want, I cant see as you cant realistically see how the AA with some of the finest kit known to man would get it wrong.
