Hi guys, new here but in need of some advice! I have a 2010 Audi A4 avant.. I believe the timing belt has slipped but not sure.

the car was in the garage for a seperate issue, broken suspension spring and the garage left a light on over night. Coming to it in the morning they recharged the battery but the engine management light came on and it felt a little different to drive.

after booking it into a electrical specialist, few days before it cut out on me and literally went into limp mode, not starting unless I give it some revs and then only crawling along. It still starts now but has no power, ticks over but when I go to set off it just cuts out.

just wondering what my options are as I was quoted £1200 to have a look and fix the timing belt if that’s the issue... is this correct, could it be anything else and if so would it be cheaper as I’m not sure whether to just sell it as spares or pursue getting it fixed for £1200

thanks for your time guys, I very much appreciate it

Hi, Try reading a thread on the A6 C7 forum by Big Townz that will give you a good insight into whats happening if indeed your cars timing has slipped, do you know the cam belt change history and the other thing I would be asking is what the codes are that led them to deduce timing belt failure, read the thread intensively and see if any of your data matches, £1200 seems pretty steep for a cam belt change I recently had mine done at a good independent garage for half that and they used an O.E. kit from TPS with a two year guarantee [unlimited milage] which is manna from heaven if like my car its being used as a cab.

Thank you for your reply, I think my usual mechanic was just rushing it through and guessing what it would entail, Iv just read through and it’s very helpful in going to try and get a little more advice on my side and see what my options are.. thank you for signposting that link 🙂

Hi the engine on your car is pretty much the same as my car with slightly different emissions gear but in principle they are the same, if you can find out what the DTCs are we may be able to give an indication as to wether your timing has slipped as in the case of Big Townz the cam position sensor was not communicating with the crankshaft position sensor because the timing had slipped due to oil from a failed camshaft seal getting onto the belt itself, its worth a read of that thread as the guy gave a fully documented history of what had happened and the work to resolve the issue which is a great road map for the rest of us.

Regards Steve.
