Not sure what is required here ?

Ah !

So, I am looking for a local enthusiast who can do quite a few jobs on my car.

I would like

1) My cam belt done ( and any other belts that could be done at the same time )

2) A new clutch fitted ( which I already have in the boot )

3) A couple of bits of door trim fixing ( just starting to come away )

4) The central locking vacuum pump in the boot needs repairing / replacing

Quite a few jobs I know, but the car is in excellent condition for its age and I would rather spend money on getting it back to its best than risk buying a pup.

Any help in finding the right person would be very much appreciated.....

My advice would be to Google Audi independent garages. I know there's one called chapman's in Leicester.  Bit far for you to go though.

Hi Steve, thank you for your input. I expected more responses to be honest, so I really do appreciate you taking the time to respond. Leicester is too far to travel and the garage would charge me a fortune. I have been quoted circa £400 just for the cam belt and a service ??

Was hoping a enthusiast would take more care of the car and obviously be cheaper.

Thanks again for your reply 👍

Hello Kevin,

I think the forum now has a better idea of what your limitations and expectations are, and from your searches for the cambelt alone, it’s clear that whoever carries out this work for you, the total bill is going to be quite substantial - it would be worth seeking an idea for the labour charge for the clutch alone.
I don’t want this to come over as being unhelpful, but the labour time is soon going to mount up, and even at ‘mate’s rates’, I think you I’ll need to brace yourself for spending a fair amount of money.
Yes there will be enthusiasts who do ‘hobbles’ but even they will expect around half of what your local garage would charge you.

I just wonder if you feel all these jobs are totally outside your capabilities - since obviously, this is your cheapest option.
I you feel they are, then another cheapest-option route would be to join a local classic car club ( your car is 20 years old) and there, you usually find enthusiasts who actively work on older vehicles, and may be prepared to take these jobs on to supplement an income, and provide some funds for their restoration.
This could be a positive route.
Kind regards,

Gareth.

Hi Kevin

i tend to agree with Gareth. The price for the belt and water pump seems to be reasonable in my opinion. I have just had mine done and it cost £600.

I think an option may be to ask around if an local garage mechanics are interested in doing a “homer”, sometimes known as cash jobs at weekends. I feel your pain my friend. Hope you get something sorted out👍

Thank you ( and Gareth ) for your replies. I obviously underestimated the costs of the jobs that I would like done.

I think you have made me realise that it is probably an uneconomical route. I didn`t expect to get the jobs done on the cheap, I just wanted them done by someone who cares about keeping a 20yr old Audi on the road. Thanks again guys and I will be keeping in touch on the site. It took me 2yr to find this car after losing my company car due to redundancy. It had 30,000 miles on the clock and is now at 73,500. My search begins again today........

Thanks Kevin, and I too feel for your plight in this economically difficult time.
Repeating ( because I think it’s a worthwhile route) - try your local classic car club/s.
Kind regards,

Gareth.
