Hi guys.

My EML came on today randomly.

i have ran VCDS on it and have got the following code and i am just want to make sure that what i have worked out is correct and to find out what is the next/best way to proceed with this - as in DIY fox or if its better to go into a garage?

the data is as follows:

1 Fault Found:
16932 - Control Circuit for Reductant Heating 1
          P20BC 00 [172] - Short to Plus
MIL ON - Intermittent - Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear
             Freeze Frame:
                    Fault Status: 00000001
                    Fault Priority: 2
                    Fault Frequency: 5
                    Mileage: 113115 km
                    Date: 2021.12.31
                    Time: 18:40:02

                    Engine RPM: 866.50 /min
                    Normed load value: 53.7 %
                    Vehicle speed: 0 km/h
                    Coolant temperature: 38 °C
                    Intake air temperature: 36 °C
                    Ambient air pressure: 1000 mbar
                    Voltage terminal 30: 14.100 V
                    Unlearning counter according OBD: 40
Reducing agent quality sensor: urea concentration: 399.99 %
Sensor 2 for temp. reducing agent: act. value: 11.0 °C
Sensor for reducing agent fill level: voltage: 13107.0 mV
Reducing agent metering system heating circuit 1: actual current: 0.0 A
Reducing agent metering system heating circuit 2: actual current: 0.0 A
Pump for reducing agent: speed: 0.0 /min
Mean temperature of SCR catalyst: 58.9 °C

Readiness: 1 1 0 0 0

(i can provide full scan details if required)

from what i have found it sounds like my adblue heater No. 1 has failed.

the help im needing with is:

1. would i be correct in saying that this is inside the tank, if so do i need to remove tank etc to change it?

2. has any one got any help or advice in doing this DIY style?

thanks in advance.

Hi try cleaning the connector to the heater element, unfortunately as far as I am aware you can't change the element as they don't do it as a separate part you have to buy the whole tank in which case try Nirrol in Barking they might have one.

Thanks steve

I assume that is the connection next to the tank.

And I bet the tank isnt cheap if I need to replace the tank

Hi yes it is, but worth the effort if it turns out thats the problem plus on the later models the heater is housed in the reductent circuit where the out flow pipe runs from the pump so you only have to replace the out flow pipe with the heater connection on it apparently its quite a common fault but you will have to test the wiring for continuity. The repair section is definitely cheaper than a whole tank, there are a couple of youtube vids on the subject and even if they are the Q5 I bet yours is not much different.
