Hi all. 
love my 130K 2006 A4 Quattro.
Just spent 1K on brakes and tyres. Now, Sod’s law, the aircon compressor has failed with the drive pulley broken up it seems . 
Maybe another 1K or more to fix. 
I’ve been reading about some common and fairly serious issues with that engine:

timing chain tensioners (Pre 2007), blocked injectors cause fuel starvation, blocked heater core, HP fuel pump can break up so whole fuel system has to be replaced. 
Has anyone’s 3.0 V6 TDI made it far past 130k or is mine “end of life”?

Hi most diesel failures you mention are normally caused by a lack of regular maintenance, timing chain tensioners are caused by late or non existent oil services, blocked heaters through lack of good antifreeze and changes which stop the Block/core from corroding, cheap fuel, supermarket normally this does not have enough lubricity agent in it so it runs the pump and injectors, if you have any worries about the chain get it replaced, use a good quality fuel additive as I do my A6 according to Audi should have had the EGR/DPF replaced by now but 20k on from that time it still works fine and if I were you I would find another garage as they sound just a tad too rich. There must be loads of people with a similar or same engine who have done far more miles than yourself, what if is not a good mind set to have to live with.

All I would add is whatever confidence you place on ‘full service history’, personally, I would treat it as desirable (for the  mind!), but once you have the vehicle, treat it as if it never existed, and renew every filter with quality ones, so you have a sound basing point from which you can confidently move forward with your own servicing plan. 
For what it’s worth:-with our now high mileage ( but not annually high now), I change the oil and filter every year - using Longlife 3, and the air and pollen filters every two years.

The garage who diagnosed* also advised doing the work

(*not my normal one as engine work was anticipated and they dont do that)

I'll get them to do a though check over too, oils etc, whilst they have it apart. 

I do use Millers Diesel Power Ecomax additive

 

Thanks for your thoughts, I bought the car in late 2017 with a full service history, it seemed to have been maintained 'no expense spared' at Audi dealership. Since then, it's been serviced by a local Audi specialist [ex main dealer "master" mechanic].

Hi I do love that term master mechanic most of the time it means they were the best of a bad bunch, my daughters Q3 had full Audi service history and the telephone number bills with it, guess what when I dragged the filters out of it the air filter had the date the car was built stamped on it and the oil and fuel filter were indescribable, I wish you could talk to the garage owner I use he has removed loads of air filters and pollen filters from Audis that have the year of build written on them the crying shame is the cars are now 3-4 years old, the owners have a print out with whats been changed but in reality it has not they just tell people what they want to hear, BMW are the same the only dealer service history I would trust is Mercedes as from the couple I have worked on the o.e. part dates tally up, the Millers is a good product does what it says on the bottle.
