Hi all I have an a1 sport back 35tfsi 2019 plate can I remove the battery as want to clean the terminals. When reconnecting do I have to reset anything thanks in anticipation.

Hi the only way you may get away without a reset and all the other associated problems is get another battery of the same voltage amp hour rating and connect it with jump cables to the jump start posts in the engine bay, this maintains the voltage continuity while you remove very carefully the main battery terminals and isolate them in a pair of marigold gloves, forgive the stupid question but why do you have to clean the battery terminals on a 2019 car?.

Hi thanks Steve oh maybe I’ll leave well alone then it’s just that I only had the car around a month and it looks like a bit of corrosion on positive terminal. May I ask what happens then if I ever have to replace the battery do I need to take it to an Audi dealer. Forgive me as I’m coming from an old 2008 Ford Focus and things moved on since then .😄

On.tbe whole a replacement battery will have to be coded to the car. The life span of the battery should be 5-7 years so there should be plenty of like in it.

Hello Ian,

You could also buy a ‘code saver’ device which plugs into the cigarette lighter and is connected to a spare 12v battery - if you have one. This is the best recognised way of doing it. 
Re. Removal of corrosion on terminal connector - the least destructive way is to pour a small (in caps) amount of boiling water on the terminal - do one at a time and dry water off between dealing with the other one. Thoroughly dry each one before applying a light covering of Vaseline. 
Re. Eventually replacing the battery? The new battery will need to be coded to the car, so best resolution is to buy yourself a good brand battery ( I use Varta - usually original supplier to VAG, or Bosch - same in reality) with a 5 year warranty bought from specialist on- line suppliers such as Battery Megastore, Tayna etc - no connection with either and there are more. Then find yourself a local VAG independent, and get them to swop it over and code it.

Thanks for your message and input I’m only glad I didn’t go in like a bull in a china shop and disconnect it as I said before I have come from a 2008 Ford Focus things moved on from then 😄.

Hi nothing wrong with an old Focus they were good cars but the Audi is a different level as just about everything on the car has to be coded when replaced its just another way of dealers making mega bucks out of the customer, the thing I always admired about the Fords was if you replaced something like an EGR on the older ones technically it had to be readapted but if you did not have the software available it meant a couple of hours of ropy running and then it would sort its own life out, the Audi on the other hand will spit its dummy out and throw up lights on the dash, best example is if you disconnect the battery on a Ford you just reconnected it and off you went as the battery counter is in the dash, the Audi will probably loose the electric window functions and a few others so you have to go and ruin your wallet with them £170 just for the inspection, if Audi dealers were named after a bird of prey they would be known as Shitehawks.

Hi Steve,

yes as you say when I had my focus I could literally do most jobs on it put it back together it would run ropey for few days then sort itself out .
