Hello all,

I'm pleased to be part of the community I have recently purchased an AUDI A3 8V se Ultra its the 1.4 TFSI 6 speed manual with 150BHP.

It has an very rough gear shift going into 1 can be an issues and also from 4 over to 5 or 6 requires a fair bit of force to push into gear same with going into reverse. It seems like a gear selector issue (worn bushes or work shifter would have been my guess)

However when i purchased the car from Arnold clark it shows its recently as 4,800 miles ago had a gear box recondition and repair for over £1200 pound.

I could take the car back to Clarkes and see if there warranty covers the work but honestly round here they are useless and I'm not sure if I would trust them to fix the issue without causing 3 more.

The car is drivable and still very enjoyable it just seems wrong that the "premium" vag group model has a worse gear action that my previous Seat Ibiza.

Have any of you experienced similar Ive seen this was a common issue on the 8P keen to hear thoughts and if anyone has any links to replacement shifters I can only find short shifters that appear to be better quality but no uprated versions of the OEM part.

Hello Nathan,

Many thanks for joining, and sorry to hear of your issue.

As I see it, you are assuming ( in caps) that the issues are associated with the selector mechanism, and not the gearbox internals - you could well be right, but …..

Once you start investigating the issue and attempting to rectify it by independent means, you can understandably kiss goodbye to your warranty.
If this were mine, then I would be informing the seller in writing ( e-mail will do) of your discontent, and asking them to rectify the problem - it is their responsibility to do so. You will retain your option to reject the car if they don’t rectify it.

As a matter of interest Nathan - did you know about the gearbox work before you bought it?
Kind regards,

Gareth.

Hi Gareth,

Thank you for you message i agree with your points, the main reason I'm assuming the gear selector is at fault is my Seat had a very similar issue which was fixed by replacing two bushes on the gear selector cables.

Once I replaced those bushes and tightened the nut (not sure on the name so i will call it the selector nut) The problem was fixed.

What I find odd is that so much work was done on the gear box allegedly but the gear shifter was not addressed or it could be that this was simply not torqued correctly after the work was complete again a lot of assumptions. I do intend to take this up with A clarks but to be honest the car is sweet even with the additional effort changing gear takes occasionally its nice to drive and I'm happy with the car I have no intention of getting shot of the car I will remedy the selector issues naturally it would be nice if someone else can foot the bill.

I was curious to hear of any others having selector issues, perhaps it is a common problem but this car only has 30k on the clock.
