paradisiac82
Hi, Recently purchased an A4 Avant 3.0 TDI Quattro S-Line with the intention of breaking it, however with the condition it is in and the spec thought I might try to get it on the road. I drove it about 10miles to the MOT centre, it wouldn't go above 4th gear but it mainly just stayed in 3rd gear. There are no dash lights on, car drove really nicely, would rev as expected, not juddery gear changes, just wouldn't go up past 4th (even when switched to manual and using the flappy paddles). When I purchased it they said that they had recently done a gearbox fluid and filter change and the problem came on not long after, although how much of this is true I don't know. I have scanned with VCDS and get the following codes 17167 - Shift Monitoring P0783 - 000 - 3-4 Shift - Intermittent Freeze Frame: Fault Status: 00100000 Fault Priority: 0 Fault Frequency: 1 Reset counter: 40 Mileage: 204132 km Time Indication: 0 Freeze Frame: RPM: 2496 /min RPM: 2336 /min RPM: 1248 /min (no units): 42.0 (no units): 101.0 Temperature: 28.0°C T.B. Steve Q
If you've bought it from a dealer in the last 30 days then they have an obligation to fix it. Or you can ask for your money back. If it was a private seller then they might have fobbed you off. Usually a gearbox oil change is the first thing to be done if the auto gearbox starts playing up. Magnet
Seems it was bought to break Steve. Kind regards, Gareth.

Hi, it was bought privately, I knew there was this fault, but it was cheap. It has Xenon lights, full heated leather interior, S-Line bumpers etc so I knew I would get my money back breaking it, but it seems a shame to break it if this is not a massively expensive fault

If the latter it won't be cheap

I think a module change will be a few hundred quid. Obviously worse case scenario is a knackard gearbox. What sensors are linked to these boxes? is there an easy way of knowing which gearbox I have without getting under the car to read it off the box? I keep getting told the CVT boxes are awful, but then some places say only the FWD boxes are bad....... with the module is it just a case of ordering a new one and swapping it out? or do they need coding in

Steve Q
The CVT gearbox is known as a weak gearbox. Has the car been used for towing? If so that won't have helped it's condition. I think the modules are known to be more unreliable on the CVT.

No, luckily the tow bar was one of the only optional extras the owner didn't go with when they got the car, so never towed 🙂

I'd definitely say the module. The serial number seems to be present on that diagnostic check you've done.

I did a quick search for 09L 927 156 and several second hand ones pop up, does the software version etc have to all match up too?

Sooo.....I cleared the codes (after fitting a new battery the codes didn't come straight back) and took it for a drive around my car park (no MOT so can't go on the roads 😞), only managed to get to 3rd gear due to the short distances, but codes have not come back yet (not sure if it needs to try to get into 4th, 5th, 6th before it realises there is a fault). It did however feel the same as though the clutch was slipping in a manual when it changed gear, not sure if that is normal or not. Put it in S mode and it launches really well, surprised how much it pulls from standing.
Steve Q
That's positive 🙂 the slipping clutch sensation is probably the cause of the issue.
