I'm guessing this may be a canbus issue, but I had a faulty nearside front fog light that showed up as a warning light on the dashboard.
On inspection, the lamp had blown and melted the housing to the extent that the metal diffuser was dislodged, so I replace the whole lamp housing along with a new, correctly rated tungsten fog lamp.

The system still reports a faulty fog lamp and will not reset. I'm grateful for any suggestions, thank you.

Removed lamp, reconnected, canbus now happy. Ridiculous, over-complicated systems for the sake of it.
