Been to the garage and heard the old girl running. There's knocking from the crank, and turbo is whistling/whining louder then it ever did before. The video says it all really.

I'm in a predicament, repair engine, replace engine or scrap the car. Head says scrap, heart says rebuild. I've been doing research as finding knowledgeable people non the 2.5 is few and far between.

I've sourced a second hand aym engine with 3 months warranty in Spain for £811 including postage. However the history on it is questionable. I've tried to source one in the UK without success.

My garage where the car has been maintained for the last 18 years don't want to touch it for a rebuild. Darkside developments don't touch 2.5tdi engines, I've contacted another specialist who has got back to me.

Going to try again today though.as I have more leads.

From what I'm reading, besides the engine I might have to change the injection pump as that's coded to the car but the current one will only work on the lower horse power versions. I'd need the l pump if I fit a bau engine which has 180bhp as standard and seem more plentiful.

The most extreme approach is to now build a performance 2.5tdi engine (stage 4) as it might be my only chance in life to get a highly modified car.

As you can imagine I'm devastated and scrapping it isn't on the cards really. I just know once I start I'll end up doing more to it like changing the clutch and DML etc.

I’m really sorry to hear about this Steve, particularly since I know the car has sentimental connections.
Bottom end knocking? Possible to remove sump with engine in situ? If so, it should be possible to slide in some new shell bearings which should buy you some more mileage, even if the crank is worn.

Fostering relations with a local classic car club, may give you pointers towards contacts.

It’s all a bit clutching at straws, but worth a good coat of thinking about.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do Steve.

Kind regards,

Gareth.

So sorry to hear this news Steve,  I know how much you love that car and share your sentiments entirely as I couldn't think of parting with my old Z3.
But....unfortunately, sometimes every dog has its day (old saying, not saying your car is an old dog) and it also comes down to an issue of spares availability like you are experiencing now. So, looking forward to a few more years of motoring if you go ahead with another engine or a rebuild like Gareth has suggested, but you may be caught out at any point in the future with another unexpected issue and you can't get the parts or indeed the skilled labour to repair it.
If you do go ahead with repairing it then I wish you all the luck and if you were any closer in the country then I would willingly lend you a hand with the spanners.

P.S.  Just a thought but rather than sourcing an engine how about trying to find a complete car going for spares/repairs that you could hear the engine running and it would be a lot cheaper and also gives you a valuable source of spares?

Thanks both for your valid inputs.

It's definitely a tough call. I've contacted a few garages, as my usual garage won't touch it. 2 others haven't got back to me a d darkside developments saud they don't touch the 2.5tdi.

I'm going to contact the Audi independent specialist too.

I'm very much of the opinion of getting her back on the road. Which leaves the following options:

Find a donor and transfer everything over. My problem with a donor or 2nd engine nis that it just buys me time and doesn't secure the cars long term future.

Rebuild current engine with either performance parts or stock. But in effect having a new engine other than block and heads. If I build a performance engine then I would upgrade brakes and suspension and then get an agreed valuation with insurance to make it harder for it to be written off.

Or As engine is out do a full restoration. As other things like electrics need looking at anyway.

Hi Steve I am sorry to hear of your problems, in my humble opinion the obvious route would be a standard rebuild as performance rebuild would be a bit much in view of the milage, too much stress on an old lady, better to rebuild the original engine as standard and the rest of the money on restoration of the chassis, my friend who owns the garage I use bought a MK3 Escort Cosworth as a basket case, basically a rolling shell with all the trim inside it and no engine, £8,000 he is now driving himself mad building an engine that will run about 400bhp the parts costs are horrendous thats without his time and expertise, I can see it with this car as they are rare but what you must consider is will the car you own ever be classed as rare and will it warrant vast expense in view of the imminent arrival, therefore to get the best of both worlds rebuild the engine and see how it goes as the other route is you appearing on CAR SOS in ten years or so.

Steve.

Its funny I thought about car sos! No way I'd qualify now.

Partly the reason for the performance route was to rebuild a whole new engine excluding the bock as that avoids issues with DVLA. Plus with an expensive modified engine I'd go the agreed valuation route and this protecting the car slightly better from a write off situation.

I've also weighed up that performance parts will cost no more overall than the stock genuine Audi parts where I can source them. That's my rationale.

My brother thinks I should go the whole fig and Dona full resto as the engine is out anyway.

All specialists I've contacted are shocked I've got 344k out of a no rebuilt 2.5.

I'm waiting on full confirmation on how bad it is. I'm finding it hard to find a specialist to work on it.

Hi Steve they achieved the extra capacity by using the same pistons but slightly shorter con rods [old Ford trick] the old Kent 1300/1600 used the same piston with different sized rods but the block was the same in every respect, might be well worth giving Kevs engine a go as it will save you a bundle as well as the fact it comes with the ECU, if he says its mint I would definitely agree as it beyond doubting his experience and judgement.

Steve how would it work regarding hooking up the instrument cluster and injection pump as both are coded to the ECU?

And I'd need to replace to radiator, starter motor etc wouldn't it?

Would it bolt up to my 6 speed manual gearbox?

Would it be easier to fit the 1.9 pd150?

What's the service history on the engine Kev?

What mileage has it done?

what's the bhp etc? Interesting it's been mapped by darkside.

Would it come complete, Ie: just take it out the iveco and go straight into the A6.

And how much?? 🙂

I do appreciate the help from both of you as I really want to save the old girl. Every engine rebuilder I speak to are saying no.

Hi Steve I think you will find that the instrument cluster from my understanding would be controlled by the body control module but anything to do with starting and emissions is the ECU I will ring those that know Tuesday to confirm if the block and heads are all the same it should just be a case of bolting on all your existing emissions gear, it might be a bit of a faf but I am working on the theory based on my car that the block and head are the same as each other my engine is CNHA but the DETA engine on my neighbours Q5 is virtually the same but with different ECU  programming but before we get carried away we await milage etc from KEV, will look in to the other engine.

Hi Kev was it a manual or auto and can you give the engine code, if he had to change the clutch I can only see it being the flywheel Clutch assembly and backing plate to take the manual box if its got the ECU with it could well be just a case of pairing it to the car even with a bit of fiddling its still a worthwhile cheaper fix. I suppose it all rests on the bargaining on price, Bonnie Lad.
