So I failed my MOT recently due to: Anti-lock braking system warning lamp indicates an ABS faultStop lamp(s) not working NearsideWheel bearing rough when rotated Offside Front

Kwik fit couldn't sort that so took it to Audi specialist who sorted it by replacing OSF ABS sensor and wheel bearing BUT

the steering wheel light is now on (see picture) so I can't pass MOT. They said its steering wheel rack needs to be replaced and thats £1290. I said obviously, that wasn't on when I brought it in so you've done something. First they tried to say it was on when I brought it in (ball ox) - when I refused to accept it - they've said its a sensor on the steering rack thats led to the light but nothing they've done. Can someone please shed a light on this? Any advice is appreciated as I want to get back at them and take it as far as I can

Hi is there no independent garages near you, Audi specialists/Kwikfit are the biggest shower of thieving its on the planet Kwikfit are wary of doing anything that might get the workshop dirty and the other monkeys will try and create work, so suggest you get a third party to have a look assuming its conventional power steering not electric could be someone has unclipped the wiring to the sensor.

Aye there is, I've already got one in mind. Appreciate the advice mate, i'm eager to learn now so I can keep myself right. Fed up, always the same ball ox. Its an Audi A3 sportback 2006 so I think its conventional - definetely going to give the independent a call tomorrow. Cheers.

BEST MATE IS  M O T  TESTER

Posted

Definitely don't rely on Kwikfit for anything except tyres. They know little and care less.

You need somebody that can properly diagnose the problem. Your best option for that is an independent VAG specialist.

Orite mate, thanks for the reply. I wasnt clear in my last post - Kwikfit did mot and refused the retest. Vasstech VAG fixed problems and then left it with steering wheel light on - said it was there before I brought it in,  it wasnt, and then said it's going to be steering wheel rack replacement £1290. I wouldn't hv it. Then manager called back and said they'd look into it for free as goodwill. Then went back on it and said def would be sensor on steering wheel rack - so needs full replacement. Super suspicious

Yes, very suspicious. Possibly the rack sensor or its wiring was damaged during the wheel bearing change. It would not be the first time that repair of one fault created another by disturbance of the wiring. Apart from going to another company for a diagnosis, (without mentioning the problems with Vasstech or Kwikfit to avoid any prejudice), I don't know what to suggest.

Kind of got them good so far - I called them, the technician says the light was on when he pulled the car into the garage tuesday, but that means it wasn't there Monday and they have to acknowledge that. So, I said that and they've went full bull and said it was there Monday too. So im wondering do they have a duty to inform me of that considering they ran a diagnosis for the ABS dashboard light on the Monday?

Hello Ian,

You now seem to have two threads running on the same topic.

I don’t want to appear unhelpful with this, but I feel opinions on here could end up being misleading, since it’s unlikely anyone has sufficient legal experience to correctly assist you.
As a result of that, I would think your more progressive route would be to present your case to the Citizens Advice Bureau, and I would expect that they would be able to offer you the advice you need.
Kind regards,

Gareth.

If you could get the full VCDS log of a code read, you would at least get the date and time that the error first appeared. It might even be something silly like steering wheel is not at 0 degrees when driving straight which will throw an error.

Steering wheel full lock left ,then full lock right, then drive straight and that usually clears it,by doing the initial work on the car sometimes a host of lights are thrown up,have they tried just deleting the fault???
