Can't say I've ever heard of this before.

Hi Lorraine,

Are you saying you are getting wisps of smoke from these locations when the engine is hot (and off).  Is this when you remove the oil cap and dip stick?  Or when the oil cap and dip stick are in place?

If you are saying it is when you remove the oil cap / dip stick, i would say this could just be hot oil vapours?

If it is happening when the oil cap / dip stick is in place, i would say i haven't heard this before either.  But still could be hot oil vapours.

Thanks, Joe

Welcome Lorraine, and thanks for joining.
I think I have this right, but could you just confirm that when you partially remove the dip stick, you are conscious of pressure being blown passed the dipstick - I used to call it chuffing - and was the primary test for diesels ( in particular) for blowing passed the pistons, usually due to bore and/or piston ring wear.
Does that principle still apply with the breather systems on the more modern engines ???
What service history does the car have, and even if it’s not blowing excessive smoke from the exhaust, have you had it long enough to judge its oil consumption?
Kind regards,

Gareth.

Hi could well be the breather on the rocker cover is becoming blocked so the gas will take the path of least resistance, dipstick/oil filler cap.

Thanku guys..

Weve only had the car 2wks...it really is a lovely car.. Drives superb but my dad isn't an audi lover and reads the A1s have a lot if issues so being his granddaughters first car hes a little over zealous i think but i thought id get advice with u audi experts 😊

It has a full service history.. 11 stamps in the book.. The first 4 were audi the rest are garages.. 97.5k miles.

Had a tiling belt and water pump at 77k and recent clutch and flywheel..

Its not a lot of smoke coming from the dip stick or oil Cap when warm but dad seems to think its a bad sign.

Yesterday morning starting from cold it idled a little lumpy to usual which my daughter noticed but reved it a little and it  then ticked over normally... And drives lovely...

Just soo worried as heard injectors are a common fault and very expensive.. Probably wouldn't cover the 3000k mile warrenty given with the car either from the garage..

If it was my car id probably think nothing of it but being her first car and her saved money to buy it i am just flapping a bit i think 🤦‍♀️ sorry this is more like a agony aunt post.

Ive notice a bit of oil burning smell on cold start too that soon goes..

Checked oil every other day and no loss or leaks known as i check oir drive for it

Hello Lorraine,

Rest assured on two counts:-

The older generation (and I’m well qualified!) will always find something to be dissatisfied about.

If they have ab inherent dislike of a particular marque, then that will amplify the above statement.

If this were mine:-

I would be checking what Stevey Y has said, and see what is found.

Keep doing what you are doing -  and keep regular checks on the oil and water levels when cold, stop worrying, and simply enjoy the car. It will let you know when something is wrong!
Kind regards,

Gareth.

p.s. Also check tyre pressures regularly - often overlooked.

Well done - enjoy.
Tyre pressures? Should be listed inside the fuel flap cover Lorraine.

Gareth.
