Steve Q Posted April 29 Posted April 29 Thought I'd do a guide highlighting which Audi models had a timing chain or Cambelt driven 4.2 V8 for reference. All C5 models equipped with the 4.2 V8 excluding allroad is belt driven which is much better to service, and All D2 A8,S8, and D3 A8 up to 2006 The models that use the modified FSI chain driven 4.2 V8 engines are the C5 Allroad (BAS engine code), C6 A6, D3 A8, and A8L starting in 2007, S4, RS4, Q7. An engine pull is required to service the timing chain on these FSI units due to the location being at the back of the engine next to the firewall. overall the belt driven engines are better serviceable and also have less issues if well maintained. The chain driven 4.2 is known for overheating issues and timing chain issues.
56Doc Posted April 29 Posted April 29 (edited) Hi Steve, I had a 2004 V8 Allroad, it had cam chains (x4) on the back of the engine, same as the later versions. the chains had started to rattle, which was why I sold it on after I tried having the tensioners replaced to fix it, made no difference, so as I couldn’t afford the repair, I sold it before it became a bigger issue! The chains were a £6k job to remove the engine & replace them all. Edited April 29 by 56Doc

56Doc Posted April 30 Posted April 30 I’d heard of the powershift issues but little about any eco boost engines. my brother has a fiesta with the 3pot eco boost and they love it.

56Doc Posted April 30 Posted April 30 Well, as I said, I don’t know anything about them as I’ve never owned one but they love it. Very economical, and it seems to have plenty of grunt for such a small engine on the odd occasion I’ve driven it.
