Towing with b9.5 Teknik tdi 35 saloon(UK)

Recommended Posts

If anyone has concerns about towing with an A4 b9.5 I've just completed my first towing trip. Contrary to some online posts I've found it an excellent tow car. The car is fitted with a Westfalia detachable tow bar with dedicated electrics and It towed my  caravan at a full 1400kg load with no issues. The van was sensibly loaded, the tyres are the OE spec  Michelin 225/50 94H set at the full load pressure given on the door post sticker and the nose weight was set at 70kg. I towed on motorways, A roads & back lanes. I can't comment on wind deflection as the wasn't much about but it was stable enough when overtaking or been overtaken by HGVs.

(My previous tow car was a VW Passat TDI 2.0)

Hi Pete, glad you find this model makes a great tow car, we (Me & the missus) upgraded to a very similar model - A4 Avant 2.0 TDI S-Line 35 from a Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer 2.0 diesel, I fitted and coded the towbar myself and tow a 1487kg caravan and like yourself find it an excellent tow car helped by it being a DSG auto, only difference I find is it is a little worse on fuel then the Insignia!

Couple of questions regarding the towbar fitment - how close is the towball to the bumper? Our caravan hitch (Alko stabiliser type) 'just' clears the rear bumper when attaching to towbar. Towbar is a Witter detachable. And when your caravan is connected does the rear facing camera still show/work on the centre screen? Coding info I've seen says it should show a 'trailer' connected? Haven't got a photo but could post one in the future.

Hi Paul

I've only towed once so far and to be honest I can't remember. However I'm away in the van in a weeks time so I will answer all your questions on my return.

Cheers

Pete
