Indicator light fault

Hi, when I use the left indicator, the light on the dash blinks at high speed, while the lights hemselves on the front and rear of the car,  and on the left mirror operate at normal speed. The fault light on the dash also illuminates, showing a bulb with a red cross on it. This is an intermittent problem, and resets when the ignition is turned off and then on.

The right indicator operates just fine.

Any ideas on a possible cause? Thanks.

Following on from Gareth's sound advice you could also get a diagnostic check to see if any fault codes flag up as it could be an issue with the light switch or indicator stalk.

Ran a scan using OBDEleven and this popped up:

 01134 - Alarm horn No signal/communication
            static
03192 - Left rear turn signal bulb 2 Electrical error in circuit
            Intermittent
