mmck
Hello, This is my first post on the page. I have been driving and 2010 A6 c6 Avant 2.7 TDI with the cvt auto box, for the past 5 years. There is 167 I on the clock and it has a full service history until present day. Recently I ha e noticed a grinding/ rubbing noise come from the car only to discover that there is a issue with my gearbox. I have need quoted £4k to carry out a gearbox refurbishment. I can't justify spending the much money on the car. I am going to to replace this A6 with another A6 Avant. I was wondering if any members would have advised on the best choice of A6 Avant to purchase. I was thinking about buying a 2015 or 2016 A6 Avant ultra 2.0 TDI with a manual gearbox. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Regards.
Steve Q
Great spec you're looking at and good idea playing safe with a manual gearbox. Check service history of any car you're looking at including when cambelt and water pump were last changed and gearbox last serviced.
mmck
Hi SteveQ, Thank you for the reply. The service history is number 1 thing I look for in any car. The ultra model seems to be the top of the range or am I mistaken. Regards.
Darren140
I had a 2016 Avant ultra 2.0tdi but with an auto box. Drove over 120k miles and never missed a beat. Great car. 1

mmck
Hi Darren 140. Thank you replying. I am a bit torn as I like the auto box. I will probably the manual for a while. Regards.

mmck
Hi everyone, Just an update on my car search. I picked up a 2015 A6 Avant ultra Black Edition earlier today. It is in really good condition. It has 92k on the clock. The service history is kept electronically by Audi which I will be looking into. I hope to collect the car by the end of next week after the dealer has carried out a full service, including replacement of the cam belt and water pump. The 20" alloys will be refurbished as the lacquer is beginning to peel. The car will have a full years MOT. Regards Martin
Magnet
Hello Martin, To quote you ‘..service history is No1 thing I look for’ , yet you say you have committed to buy this car without sight of the service history. It's surprising how often FSH can disappear into the ether once the buyer has committed to purchase.
mmck
Hi Magnet. Thank you for your post. I'm assured that the service history is there with Audi. It will be available to me when I register the car in my name. I can't access the history as it in the previous owners name and because of data protection. I have been assured by the dealer today that that the car has a full service history. Regards Martin.
Magnet
Hello Martin, OK, once you register the car in your name then it’s yours - even if the car turns out not to have any, or FSH. I guess you are assured by the seller that ‘the service history is there will the dealer’. If so, why cannot the seller obtain evidence of that? In addition, I’ve not failed to get service computerised information from main dealers for a vehicle that I’m interested in buying, even though I had not bought it at that stage. GDPR:- The main dealer will understandably not release details of the previous owners names and addresses, but should be able to confirm what services it’s had at what mileages and dates. Of course, your call. Kind regards, Gareth. p.s. You may be getting the cambelt and water pump renewed (with aftermarket parts) even if it might previously been replaced using Audi parts. Still…..
cliffcoggin
I feel I must echo Gareth's caution. Buying a car without seeing its service history first, is like buying the car without looking at it first or test driving it. Trusting the dealer's word is risky in the field of car buying. That's not to say all dealers are shady characters, but there are enough of them in the market to make me very wary.
Steve Q
Why can't the dealer get the electronic print out? Make sure there's proof of cambelt and water pump change and gearbox oil service. I got an electronic print out for my ford Kuga recently and it had 30k miles missed off it! Even though it's only been serviced at midnight dealer from new. Luckily my Kuga still has a service book and I've got the invoices. The problem is now with GDPR it's harder to see the proof of work done
