Car for sale

Hi there, 

My Dad sadly passed away in July and unfortunately we have to sell his car. 

It is a black Q5 Quattro TFSI Automatic with low mileage, just under 23,000.

Im wondering what sort of price I should be asking for the car? As some of the main dealers we have been to have not offered as much as we thought.

Dad really took care of his car.

First things first - can we pass on our condolences for your Dad’s passing. Not an easy time - they only give us one, so always bad news.

A couple or so pointers to hopefully help with your query:- 

Main dealers will not be interested in the car (as good as it may be), since in general, they do not retail vehicles over 5 years old. If they are going to buy it off you, it will be at a price low enough to resell it into their trade contacts at a profit, so really no point in perusing that route. 
Ways forward:- Enter the details into Parker’s Guide, and you will come up with a ball park valuation for an average mileage car sold privately. If you want a ‘mileage adjusted’ quote, then I believe you have to pay. Worth doing that?? 
Search eBay and Autotrader for similar year examples, building up a picture of a number of valuations, some of which might be for lower mileage examples. 
It is worth noting that (unless you are very lucky) you are unlikely to sell the car at prices that dealers are asking, since yours will not be sold with any warranty. 
Apologies for being pessimistic, but you are trying to sell very much at the low demand end of the year., and the car will effectively be a year older by the end of the month.

Another disposal route could be via. the Motorway advertising route, or similar. I don’t have any experience of this, but you could investigate. 
On a brighter note, such low mileage cars normally find homes among family and friends, and as such tend not to spread out to the wider market.

Thank very much for getting back to me. A neighbour of my dads advised me to join this club just to see if anyone was interested in the car on here as he said that the members on here are all Audi enthusiasts and would likely treat the car well once purchased.

We really wish we could keep the car but my mum doesn't drive and myself and my husband already have a car each on finance so just cant afford all 3 cars. We are a bit reluctant to sell privately to people that will maybe not appreciate the car, also we were worried about any come backs. We also know that most people will want to test drive the car which means we would need to go with them and both of me and mum felt a bit vulnerable doing this. My husband works so would not be around alot to do this for us. We know that selling privately will take longer too and all this time the car will be getting older if that makes sense. Just really wanted to get a decent price for Dad as he loved his car.

Our posts overlap. 
As stated, please list it on here. 
Private sales and comebacks? We can advise you on suitable wording to minimise that risk. 
Test drives? Is the car currently taxed and MOTd and insured for you to drive. Policies can lapse when the policy holder dies, so you would need to check on that. Wise to take a male neighbour or friend with you. 
Getting a good price? Perhaps being pessimistic, but obtaining a ‘good price’ will limit the number of interested buyers. In my opinion, you would be better off biasing this to a quick and uncomplicated sale.

I think we should be able to advise you at any stage Lisa. 
Your Dad’s neighbour is right in some respects re club, but worth bearing in mind that members on here already own Audis, whereas you need to sell to someone who hasn’t got one.

I think your expectations of finding a buyer who will both treat the car well and give what you consider to be a good price are unrealistic. We all believe our cars are worth more than buyers will offer, so it is a shock to discover how little even a six year old car will fetch.

Hi Gareth,

The MOT is all in date, and we have insurance to drive it. Car tax runs out in early Jan 2025 though. We do have some dealers interested and as and other members have said maybe im being unrealistic about the price. 

We wouldn't want to keep putting on neighbours/friends to be there for test drives really.

Need to think about what we will do, know dealers only offer you about 80% of what you would get privately/what they will actually sell it for as I know they need to make a profit too. Selling to a dealer may be the quickest and least stressful option for us.

That sounds fine Lisa, and I do understand. 
Only one (pessimistic, I’m afraid) point to make. Dealer paying you about 80% of its private sale value? I would be very surprised if you achieved that from a dealer. 
Just consider:- their mark up profit would be subject to around 25% tax, then they have 20% VAT to settle, in addition to having to honour a guarantee on anything that goes wrong with it for a minimum of 30 days. 
Still, I think we all wish you well in achieving your goal.

I think dads car would maybe be worth around £23,000 sold privately possibly and we have achieved 80% of this. So I guess maybe the price we have been offered from the dealers is not as bad as i first thought?

I have got some quotes from car wow that were ok, but I am not really that sure how the site works. Do the people come and view the car and want to test drive it etc?
