Steering Noise

Hi all !

My 2015 A5 tdi s-line has developed a grinding noise / feel in the steering.

My son used the car and reported that when he got in the steering lock didn't come off as usual but after a yank on the wheel it unlocked, since then we have the grinding noise / feel, has anyone seen this before? is there a way to remove the lock and lubricate perhaps? any other suggestions?

He did not unlock it he broke it, so it's only right that he pays for a new one.

Update

The lock is not the issue, the rack boot from the near side has came off and the dirt / salt has made the bearing fail.

Has anyone replaced that standard looking bearing? or do I need to replace the rack?

Are there any trusted experts in the York area?

Its a 2015 with the electronic PAS

Hopefully the bearing can be replaced as a new rack will cost a fortune!
