BadgerKev Posted December 29, 2024 Posted December 29, 2024 Hi , I hope there is there someone on her that has the skills and experience to help please. We have a 1.8 S line auto on 62 plate. The car stopped and was recovered, eventually to a specialist auto transmission workshop. I will try to bullet point a six month journey that has left the vehicle running like a dream (engine wise) but sat in our garage with "gearbox Malfunction" warning. The car was diagnosed with mechatronic fault and so it was replaced with new one from VAG. It wouldn't finish the learning process and stopped when the engine was started. It should a turbo fault and the technicians said this could stop the process and so the turbo was replaced. It still didn't learn and so the clutch was replaced, gearbox inspected, new seals etc. It has been confirmed by serial numbers that it is the original box. An audi specialist was then enlisted, and after a very long process, Audi Germany were contacted and after another new clutch being fitted they said it must be the gearbox. The Transmission guys refute this as they have inspected it ( complete strip down and rebuild) and Audi would not give assurance that a new box from them would fix it... So here we are...the car works, drives (albeit with a slip when pulling away) and the body is spotless, has new clutch, mechatronic and turbo! I am reluctant to spend another 6k on a box if it won't fix it! It is simply too good to scrap but I really don't know what else to do. I would be so appreaciative if somebody could offer us any advice please.

cliffcoggin Posted December 29, 2024 Posted December 29, 2024 Sorry to read of your plight Kevin. It sounds like Audi and the gearbox builder are each clutching at straws in their diagnostic guesses, then trying to pass the buck onto the other when the guesses prove to be wrong, all the while happily taking lots of money off you. All I can suggest is that you find another gearbox specialist to diagnose the fault, one who is prepared to back up his diagnosis with a guaranteed fix if you should award him the work. I am not in your neck of the woods so I don't know of anybody suitable. Whether you can recover some money from the clowns you have consulted so far will depend on the success of the final repair. Professional legal advice may be needed on this matter. 1
cliffcoggin Posted December 29, 2024 Posted December 29, 2024 Kevin. I have merged your two identical topics into one and moved them from the Introductory section to the A3 section. Please do not create duplicate topics. 1

He says he couldn't fix it so he can't charge in good faith. I offered to pay but he was having none of it. Just the turbo was charged as a third party garage did it. I'd just really like to get a solution as it appears it has all new parts...even down to checking voltages, earth's etc. He said he has never had this in 29 yrs! If we could find another PAX box he would swap it over and try again. I thought you guys would be the knowledge base where someone may have experienced something before. Apologies for the duplication...thought I'd posted to A3 forum originally, and thank you for engaging with me. It is most appreciated!
Steve Q Posted December 29, 2024 Posted December 29, 2024 Glad you've not been charged for the megatronics replacement. Could you try to find a second hand gearbox of the same code? 1
BadgerKev Posted December 29, 2024 Author Posted December 29, 2024 I've tried to find one but no success.
Steve Q Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 Been searching for you but struggling to find anything with "pax" code. What's the actual gearbox number? As you might have more luck that way. 1
BadgerKev Posted December 30, 2024 Author Posted December 30, 2024 Hi Steve, this is one of the bits of info I have (attached). It definitely states PAX. I can't find any mention of that code anywhere...I was hoping there would be someone on here with an alternative? auditec.pdf
