ACel Posted Thursday at 10:13 AM Posted Thursday at 10:13 AM Hello! We have a 2020 Audi A4 Avant which we are big fans of apart from one thing - when it rains (which it obviously does a lot in the UK) our boot lid fills with rain....so the next time we go to open the boot a load of water comes pouring out of the side of the boot. I haven't yet had a chance to look at seals etc but has anyone had this problem before? Thanks!
spartacus 68 Posted Thursday at 01:14 PM Posted Thursday at 01:14 PM (edited) Read a few threads on this. First off - can you confirm rear wash wipe still works? The motors are made by Valeo and the copper pipe eventually breaks, sending electrics haywire, goosing the motor and water into the tailgate. If that's fine - look at the rubber bump-stops. These can be adjusted so the tailgate sits a little tighter on the rubber seal. You may need to strip the tailgate trim off and get someone to spray the car with water and watch for entry point. ACel Posted Thursday at 01:40 PM Author Posted Thursday at 01:40 PM Hello @spartacus 68 thank you for this - rear wash wipe still works, my plan this weekend was to have a proper look at it - when you say bump stops do you mean the little rubber feet on the bottom of the boot lid itself?
spartacus 68 Posted Thursday at 04:54 PM Posted Thursday at 04:54 PM Think it’s called a boot lid buffer, part 8P4827239B. Just checked my car and they are not on the tailgate itself, but on the rear quarter visible with the tailgate raised. Never adjusted them before, as it’s an auto boot, but when it closes you can see the tailgate is drawn down to lock. They are held in place with Torx bolts. There maybe some adjustment, but suspect it’s the rubberised part that can be screwed in or out for height adjustment.
Sid2020 Posted Thursday at 10:47 PM Posted Thursday at 10:47 PM Quickest solution is to pop the tailgate trims off the inside, torx screw driver is only tool required and abit of gentle pulling of the trims. Ask a mate to use a hose on the rear roof/ tailgate while sitting inside with a torch, the leak usually becomes obvious very quickly but pin pointing the exact entry point can take abit of trial and error, we don’t use power washers for finding water ingress as the pressure forces water past seals that function perfectly good in the real world
flying by SQ7 Posted yesterday at 02:22 PM Posted yesterday at 02:22 PM Here's a funny one - I thought I had somehow lost a bottle of water in the back of the car - searches never found it and it was only in the recent cold weather that I realised the water is inside the rear tailgate! Removed the two bungs from the underside and litres of water came out! Spoke to the main dealer and they booked it in for water ingress without even a murmer. Seems like this is something they already know about as they said it would need to be booked in for a week! This is a 2023 SQ7! Anyone else had this on a Q7?
ACel Posted 5 hours ago Author Posted 5 hours ago So I had a quick look today - I’m not really hugely skilled so I didn’t know what I was doing. At the bottom of the bootlid itself there are two tiny 1cm is black feet that I took out (I have obviously managed to break one as I’m useless) but a decent amount of water drained from one of them. The car is going in for a service in a couple of weeks hopefully they can sort it out. Quite annoying for a car that’s only 4 years old.
Sid2020 Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago They can become blocked with sludge on the doors but the tailgate should not get a ingress of water as everything fitted to it has seals and the rear window is bonded into place so something has failed
spartacus 68 Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago Acel they are bungs for the tailgate only. The bump stops are on the rear quarter near the lights.
Sid2020 Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago If you want to replace this before putting it into Audi for a service the following should be correct for the varies b9 variants . We replace a lot when repairing rear damaged vehicles, there often installed to soon after cavity wax is injected into the tailgate or boot when new and it seals them.
