So I got my Audi in September and they said they had an oil and filter service done on it for me and there was a receipt from a third party garage with the paperwork.

usually I always do a big service on A new to me car, but I thought I could get away with waiting a bit.

finally got round to doing it today, the car was “serviced” 3 months ago/3,000 miles ago, apparently.

Glad I’ve done it as I don’t think was, will be doing another one in 6 months time.

Oh dear, I can't say the majority service was done but maybe a minor service? So just a oil filter and oil change.

Hello Dave,

We take the ‘they’ of ‘they said it was serviced..’ wasn’t a main dealer, but was a secondhand car sales operation -?
If it’s accepted that ‘we will service it before collection..’ really equates to an oil and filter service using the cheapest of materials it won’t disappoint.
At least, in your case, they only claimed to change the oil and filter, rather than a full service.
Is this a diesel by the way?
If so, the colour of the removed oil could be considered normal after 3000 miles.
Perhaps you could come back to us and colour in the detail Dave.
Kind regards,

Gareth.

it was a minor service, the consistency of the oil, it definitely wasn’t done 3,000 miles ago, especially the state of the oil filter.

Hi Gareth,

thanks for your interest.

The receipt says Minor service, oil and filter.

it is indeed a diesel and I have no issue with the colour of the oil that’s to be expected on a diesel.

The consistency though is that of a VAG group diesel not serviced for at least a year in my opinion based on my experience, the oil filter also backs that up in my opinion.

this post was really just a point to say, if you do get a new used car, get it serviced straight away by a trusted garage, or if your capable do it yourself so you know it’s done right.

Thanks,

Dave

You are preaching to the converted here David. You need to get your message to the gullible public.

Sorry I must be mistaken I thought it was an enthusiasts forum where we help one another and share our disgust at jobs not done properly.

but seems everyone is an expert and doesn’t need any help.

It is for enthusiasts and your input is very much valued. Funnily enough I'm going through a similar situation, helping a friend who's just purchased a car from a car supermarket.  They claimed to have done a minor service but yet haven't proven this, despite Asking for proof. I think following your situation a major service I think is in order. It'll be interesting to see the oil filter on this car.

We have very few ‘experts’ on here, and it’s certainly a major exaggeration to construe that ‘everyone (in caps) on here is an expert.
Having said that, I think it’s been common knowledge for decades, that service-before-sale equates only to an oil and filter change - nothing revolutionary there.
Advice has always been - treat it as if it had never taken place - and you won’t go far wrong.
Anyway Dave, thank you once again for pointing this out.
Kind regards,

Gareth.

I think the worse thing is mine came with a receipt from a third party garage which is either a fake receipt or they genuinely took the car to be serviced and it got charged for it and it wasn’t done.

filter wise, mine was really thick, you could feel it as you moved the fins, it clearly hadn’t been done for a long time, would be interested to hear how you get on, hopefully it’s not any worse than mine 🤞

All I meant by my previous comment was, the demeanour that comes across would put me off asking if I was a newbie, which I’m sure none of us want for the forum.

Hi I think what Cliff was driving at was this sort of thing needs to be publicised further afield as Cliff pointed out most people think they have the golden ticket, the bill for the job, everyone has a computer printer dont they, I have seen many examples of this with every manufacturer over the years, when he said you are preaching to the converted, most of the regular members are fully aware of what these garages do including the main dealers, prime example we have had numerous posts on every model about cars that have been in for a service under extended warranty service plans that have never had the air filter changed, one poor sod  got told that it wont be changed unless he requested it and then he would have to pay extra for that, I think what he was trying to say was that most people dont know of this and anyone spreading the news was more than welcome.

Will keep you posted. Under the 30 day warranty it's already had a clutch, slave cylinder, headlight and electric window switch. It's a 2011 Hyundai i30. It now needs a replacement gearbox!
