I have had my A6 Avant for 4 months, this weekend marked the first time we had people in the rear seats for a long journey. Imagine the shock when they pull down the centre armrest, only to discover a plastic cover in place of where the cupholders should be.

As much as I love this car, what were Audi thinking?!

When the other VAG brands are thinking logically with comfort and convenience features on their cars (especially Skoda), I cannot understand why they would make decisions like this.

Anyway, some advice please... has anyone any experience with retrofitting rear cupholders?

Simple answer: cheap, cheap, cheap. Audi have abandoned all but the pretence of quality in recent years.

Be glad it is only cupholders that are absent; other buyers are finding their hybrid cars don't actually run after less than a year, pointing to a systemic lapse in standards in the company's efforts to reduce costs.

It's a shame, right.

I definitely don't want to sound all doom and gloom, the car is incredible but I wish things weren't going this way for Audi. My parents were recently looking at a Q5 but after lots of research, they have gone for the new Hyundai Santa Fe. That just wouldn't have been a thing going back a few years.

Thanks @Steve Q for the advice on going to eBay. I'll have a look.

You're welcome. I do admit the new Santa fe is a lovely looking vehicle both inside and out. Reminds me more like the old defender than the current defender!

Audi are tight when it comes to extras. They cut back on headlamp washers, door open warning lights, and rear parking cameras, bear in mind this is for a £40k+ car. They have gone down the bundled option route for a few years, with sound pack, vision pack, tech pack. You can also re-mortgage your house for 'all extras fitted' for a Vorsprung edition in the future.

For £146 - your rear seat passengers can have a holder for their hot chocolates and sprinkles.

So, on a £50k+ car you don’t get rear cup holders unless you add the luggage pack which is £100.

Can imagine most do forget to spec it as you would assume it’s standard and then you have to pay even more £146 + fighting ?!  Crazy

Now for a totally different view:-

If I spent north of £50,000 for a car, would I allow anyone to drink anything in it? Most certainly not!
Kind regards,

Gareth.

@Namya86 - That point on the luggage pack really does annoy me. I spent quite a while with an Audi salesperson, going through the options and at no point was that mentioned. Now, you could say I should have done my research on every available option, but if that’s the case, the salespeople can wave goodbye to their jobs!

@Magnet - I used to have that approach to new cars, but our A6 is now our workhorse. All-weather mats, dog bed in the back, winter tyres on currently and caked in mud most weekends!

When I picked up and my A6 Black edition mine was the same !

after removing cover i realized that if you are never going to refit this cover you could mark out screw hole fitting positions and drill though the cover, this way you may not damage the tray clips
