We have an A4 which broke down and have been told by the AA that it was a timing belt failure and this may have caused the engine to seize. We're not getting this

verified at a garage since we've taken the decision to get a new car. Our garage suggested getting in touch with the Owner's Club to see if

anyone was interested in making an offer and would like to arrange collection. Some pics attached. Thanks, Mike

Hi have you no price in mind as I can't see there being a bidding war with no starting price, no milage, any history?

Hi Stevie - 84,000 miles. We've owned it since 2008, serviced regularly at our local garage (not Audi), latest MOT was to July 2025. WBAC offered us £250 to come and take it

off our hands but we were hoping for £500. Mike

AI Overview

No, a 2008 Audi 2.0 FSI petrol engine is not considered safe if the timing belt snaps, as it is an "interference engine" which means significant damage to the engine, like bent valves and potentially cracked pistons, can occur when the timing belt breaks due to the pistons colliding with the valves when they are not properly positioned.

Key points to remember:
  • Interference engine design:
Most modern Audis, including the 2.0 FSI, are designed as interference engines, where the valves and pistons can physically collide if the timing is off, causing damage when the timing belt breaks.

  • Major repair costs:
If the timing belt breaks on a 2.0 FSI Audi, the repair typically involves replacing bent valves and potentially other engine components, which can be very expensive.

  • Preventative maintenance:
To avoid this issue, it's crucial to follow the recommended maintenance schedule and replace the timing belt at the specified intervals.

Cheers Kev - so do you think there'll be no interest in it as scrap? Should we take the WBAC offer?
