Steve Mc Posted March 9 Posted March 9 My 2016 Q5 steering has become notchy - feels tight then loosens. Can’t see anything adrift underneath. Anyone felt this please?
Magnet Posted March 10 Posted March 10 Welcome Steve. Electric power steering? If so, first eliminate the battery as your source of the problem. Halfords stores can measure its efficiency for you. Your wallet will appreciate if you refer back to us if the battery is found to be substandard. Kind regards, Gareth. 1
Steve Mc Posted March 10 Author Posted March 10 Thanks. Couldn’t find a power steering reservoir so I think you’re right! Will check battery. I’ve also since read of intermediate steering shaft universal joint issue (seizing) which seems to afflict these cars.

Tugg Posted March 16 Posted March 16 You are not alone, I’ve the same issue. Will update if I make any progress, hopefully between us we can identify/resolve the issue
Steve Mc Posted March 16 Author Posted March 16 Thanks. YouTube has some clips of how to change the intermediate steering shaft. Not a massive job it seems. OEM Replacement shaft is about £400 but non orginaL parts also available. Being a steering component I would need to have confidence in using a non std part. Replacing the 2 bolts also seems wise. Im looking my for a good source for the shaft & 2 bolts.
Tugg Posted March 16 Posted March 16 Cheers for the update Steve, will check out YouTube. Let’s hope this then resolves the issue, as always identifying the issue is the hard part. Hopefully this thread can be closed soonish with a solution and not left open like so many others.
Tugg Posted March 19 Posted March 19 For info Magnet I had my battery checked and all good, so looking down other rabbit holes
