dEF on dash!

Hi guys... the a3 we got as a gap fill has suddenly thrown up dEF on the dash board. Everything works fine but the milage has zero'd and isn't gaining miles as we drive!

Previous owner has put led sidelights in and I noticed the other day that they have started to flicker! Could this be linked or is it just the dash is buggered? Any options as to repair or is it a throw away and fork out for a replacement?

I think I would remove the LED sidelights and fit the standard ones back in just to evaluate whether that is the root cause...worth a try as it's got to be the cheapest route to start
