Currently own a 2013 Fiesta 1L Ecoboost, looking at selling and buying a cheap runaround for a year before I buy an A5, I am looking at a A4 Avant (prefer the look of the estate than the saloon) 1.9TDI, I plan on doing more miles due to partner, would me owning a diesel and only doing 1-2 50+ mile journeys a week be OK or would it be better me going for a petrol?

What sort of price should I be looking at? Don't mind spending £3000 for one.

Hi Matthew...welcome to the Forum

I suppose if you are predominantly driving short distances then a petrol may be better all round.

If choosing Diesel, then it will need a good blast every so often to clear the DPF as it all clogs up around town driving.

Let us know which way it goes.

I wanted the diesel since I will be driving more soon, 2-3 50+ mile trips a week and also trips to Wales etc, since I plan on getting a 2001-2004 A4 1.9TDI I think these don't have a DPF? even so I shall give it a good 1 hour drive once a week at least.

Any diesel produced after 2007 will have a DPF and EGR all vehicles made before will usually have EGR only I have recently purchased an a4 avant b6 2001 1.9tdi I had never owned a diesel but has been perfect 40mpg as long as u are nice pottering around town and better mpg on motorway u have to shop around but would definatly  advise to buy.

Hello everyone. I've just bought an 1.9 TDI ('03 plated B6) Avant Quattro. I was just wondering what sort of mileage I'd be getting around town from the car? It's got a FSH, and in pretty good nick (for a 133k car!) What maintenance could I do to improve fuel economy? I was thinking about a EGR + manifold decoke and MAF clean out (And also using some Forte Diesel injector cleaner - heard really good things about it)

Many thanks
