Peter s
This post in in desperation and frustration . I am hoping someone in Audi land has a clue to whats going on. My 2010 A6 Allroad developed a knock/thump from the drivers front when ever I went over a bump/pothole. So I sent the car off to my local independent Audi garage who suggested as we all would that it was caused by a ball joint or suspension arm bush. As the car had not cost me anything over the years I told them to change them all as there was no obvious worn item. To my and the garages surprise this did not cure the knock. Over the next few weeks the knock didn't get worse but just very annoying as the roads around us are very pitted. So after further discussions with the garage it was decided that the only other thing to change was the air spring and combined strut. I did a bit of surfing after Audi quoted £1500 for the part and found to suppliers who would supply the same unit for £700. I went with the German Aerosus unit which arrived in 2 days via UPS. Today the garage fitted the unit, a simple job apparently. This to my dismay this has not fixed the problem, its still the same. Nearly £1800 down and not fixed anything. So the question is: has anyone had the same problem or can suggest what the possible cause may be ?
Trevor
Hi Peter...welcome to the Forum Sorry to hear you've had a bit of a nightmare with the noise. Sounds silly, but could it be emanating from the other side of the car and just sounding like its coming from the drivers side? Also, there are some garages that have 'shaker plates' on the vehicle ramps for MOT purposes which may be useful in dynamically diagnosing exactly where the noise is coming from. Keep us informed on how it is progressing. Cheers Trevor
Flatout
I had a similar clonk driving down a multi story carpark. It turned out to be the C links that connect the front anti roll bars to I think the wish bone. Not that expensive Good luck
Aaron07
Dont know if you got this sorted yet but i had the exact same problem with my a6 and i also thought it was a balljoint or shock. It ended up being my brake pads moving about when going over bumps i replaced the pads and the knock went try holding your foot on the brake when going over a bump and if the knock is not there then its more than likely the shoulder of your pads has wore
