Stevedunstan72
Hi, I have an issue with my A3, fault codes say its the EGR. Tried a can of EGR cleaner to no avail, car still going into limp mode. Called the local Audi dealer, cost of new valve £323, ok pricey but it is what I is. Fitting however is a 7 hour job costing £1047 !!! My questions are, Does it really take 7 hours? How difficult is it (I'm pretty handy with a socket set)? Possible to do on your own drive? Any help appreiated
Trevor
Hi Steve...welcome to the Forum You could try Terraclean who will come over to your home or work and run a treatment through the engine to thoroughly clean out the EGR and other components. I would try that first as going to be a lot cheaper and also benefits other areas of the engine that may be clogged up with carbon. Darth_stinky
I'm new to Audi ownership but regularly cleaned out the EGR value on my mk5 888 Astra. I'd get YouTube searching on how to change the EGR value before handing over that kinda cash! EGR exchange took 15mins to swap out on my old mk5 Astra!!!! i soaked my EGR value, and I mean soak the EGR value on the first clean, then went to town with a pipe cleaner/toothbrush. You need to clean as much as you can..doing just on the outside surface of the EGR value will not fix the issue. You need spend about 60mins on that first clean, if youre done in 5mins, you're not Cleaned it enough... good luck..
Trevor
I agree with Darth_stinky (great name by the way!)...if you can access it to clean it then it would be far cheaper than replacement and give you the immense satisfaction that you've saved yourself bucket loads of money and got it working again. I would however, clean the toothbrush thoroughly before putting it back into daily service again :-) Keep us updated on the progress Cheers Trevor
Stevedunstan72
Hi guys, Thanks for the advice. With time running out on me and the weather not the sort you want to lay under a car in I contacted a local garage who is a VW specialist. The car went in this morning, new valve fitted and all is now fine, around 3 hours work. Costs however.... New valve £277, labour...............£180, bargain really. Brought the old valve home to strip down and take a look at, will take photos of the valve and post on here.
