Magnet Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 Hello Jonathan, Many thanks for the helpful additional information. The following pointers may clarify the realistic situation:- Anticipated journeys of 8 to 12 miles for a diesel are just the sort of journeys such engines were not designed for - particularly since they take a comparative long time to warm up, and are unlikely to deliver anticipated optimum mpg under these operating conditions. Automatics will not give you the best of mpg compared with sensible driving with a manual. I think it is realistic to apply the following logic:- These are large (expensive) vehicles, and are seldom bought with economy being a priority, and an average of 36mpg may be considered as reasonably acceptable for a luxury automatic car. Sorry, this might not go down too well, but spending a large amount of money on a luxury car, then being concerned about its economy on short trip usage is a little contradictory. Regarding ‘duff engine’ is more likely to equate to ‘(un) reasonable expectations’ , rather than anything actually wrong with the vehicle. If it were mine, I would fill the tank up and stretch it’s legs on a nice couple of hundred miles or so, on an enjoyable motoring day out. Refill the tank on return, and see what you get mpg wise. If you are still disappointed, then I would book it in to a trusted local diesel ( in caps ) speciality to get it checked over. Kind regards, Gareth. 1
RJH9 Posted February 8, 2021 Posted February 8, 2021 Hi Gareth, I understand that this topic has probably been dissected to death but I was wondering is there any way to increase my MPG. I currently own an 14 plate A6 2.0TDi and on my daily journey of 100 miles on the M4 and M48, I am only getting around 35 MPG at 70mph. I came from a 1.6TDi Passat that would comfortably get 45 MPG + with a full car and less careful driving. I hope you can shed some light on whether I am being unrealistic in hoping for better MPG Thanks Ryan
Clintlem Posted December 4, 2021 Posted December 4, 2021 Hi,is it normal to get 43mpg on a motorway run audi a6 c7 2013 2.0 tdi..claimed is around 60ish.. Around town im getting between 20-30mpg

Clintlem Posted December 18, 2021 Posted December 18, 2021 Its my first Diesel..So I just went by the claimed figures.I came to realise that ,i was never going to see 60mpg..I am just happy to know that problem isnt with my car.Its those that exaggerated the figures thats the problem. Thanks for getting back. 1

Thanks for getting back. Yeah it's not right they claim such high figures. The 320d I was looking at was claiming upto 70mpg! It's quite obviously a bit of a scam to sell more vehicles.

beemerboy9 Posted December 20, 2021 Posted December 20, 2021 At 70mph you are probably only using 45 BHP of the 190 at your disposal. Aerodynamic drag is the major enemy at highway speeds and the the A6 is a large, heavy car and still needs a bit of gas to maintain speed up the inclines. If you had a petrol A6, then the mpg would be more like 33. Do make sure that top gear (7th?) is being used. I sometimes need to force the car into top at 70 mph - but I do have an 8-speed gearbox.

I got an 8speed as well.So pretrol would give me more mpg for town driving.. I thought something was wrong with my car at first but after diagnostics from a audi specialist i have peace of mind..they said the car is okay its getting what it should and with all the input from you guys..i came to realise its just the nature of diesels there is so much reasons that can contribute to the overall consumption

Martin Woodhead Posted November 3, 2023 Posted November 3, 2023 I had a 3.0tdi (204bhp) 2 wheel drive A6 avant on a 63 plate which I bought at 63000 miles and it was written off by a deer jumping out at it a few weeks ago. The 3.0 would regularly return about 38mpg on town running/mixed use and I have had 50mpg a couple of times on motorway driving, but on average, 38-40mpg was the real figure. Now, more forward a few weeks as I pored over loads and loads of A6 avant, in search of the replacement. I (sadly) settled on an 2016 A6 Avant SE Executive 2.0tdi Quattro (188bhp). I drove it from the North West up to the highlands today, filled up before I left and when I arrived - 346 miles or economy driving in the semi automatic s tonic box, with the car never reaching above 70mph… 39mpg. I miss the 3.0!! This car has done 91,000 miles, so I can assume it’s run in!
