Gavo Posted July 24, 2017 Author Posted July 24, 2017 hi all just to give you an update the car is booked in to another garage tomorrow, after decribing the issue they said it sounds like a drive shaft/cv joint but will confirm one he has looked at it
Gavo Posted July 25, 2017 Author Posted July 25, 2017 Hi All, Just an update Car has just been returned to me. They have also hurd the issue i am having and there also scratching there head. they have checked all wheel barings and they are fine, they have checked the CV joint/shafts and have confirmed they are fine. They have said after looking at the disks they can see where something is dragging along the disks so they have checked the dust guard and there is enough clearance bettween the disk and the guard. They have suspected it to be the brake pads ? dose this sound right ? and the scoring is on the same side the noise is comming from ?
cliffcoggin Posted July 25, 2017 Posted July 25, 2017 In the absence of any other fault I guess it must the brakes, but strangely why only when turned to one side? All that occurs to me is excessive lock pushing the guard against the track rod or some other link, though it's a remote possibility.
Gavo Posted August 4, 2017 Author Posted August 4, 2017 Hi Cliff, Apologies for the long delay in responding, today I am having both CV joints replaced and brake pads. I didn't want to replace the brake pads and the issue is still there then it would indicate that the CV joints are bad, so I am having both changed at the same time Once they have been changed I will let you know the results
Jacques Posted August 4, 2017 Posted August 4, 2017 I have heard this humming noise before from a 2002 b6 a4 we took it to the garage and they said it was the steering rack which was leaking therefore creating the humming noise when turning. My advice would be check your power steering fluid and see if it leaks or not and if it does leak I would check the condition of the steering rack and go from there, hopefully it might just be that the power steering fluid level is low. I hope it goes well :)
Gavo Posted August 4, 2017 Author Posted August 4, 2017 Thanks Jacques for your message I don't think it would be PS fluid as I think my is electric steering rack Strange really as some say humming and mechanic said grinding
Magnet Posted August 4, 2017 Posted August 4, 2017 Hello Gavo, The only problem I would find by replacing the brake pads and CV joints at the same time is you will not know which was causing the noise if it is cured. I think I would replace the pads first (as the cheapest option by far) and if this does not solve it, then change the CV joints. Good luck, Gareth.
Jacques Posted August 4, 2017 Posted August 4, 2017 3 hours ago, Gavo said: Thanks Jacques for your message I don't think it would be PS fluid as I think my is electric steering rack Strange really as some say humming and mechanic said grinding Oh yes sorry I didn't look at how new your Audi was I'm used to working on the more older models I hope you find the problem I will try to help where I can good luck :)
Gavo Posted August 4, 2017 Author Posted August 4, 2017 Thanks for your advise jacques thanks for your advise Gareth and decided to go with what you suggested , I have changed the brakes and the noise is still there, so I went ahead and changed both cv joints and the noise is still there so now I'm really stuck in what it would be as I ent got a clue now, disks & pads changed/ wheel barings/hub changed/ and now cv joints not sure what else it could be. It's only when car is in motion dose not do it stationary could it be a bad tyre and bad tracking ? As I have noticed the wear is in on edge of tyre
Magnet Posted August 5, 2017 Posted August 5, 2017 Really sorry to hear that Gavo. Tyres? I have learnt to never ignore the simple things, so it would be well worth putting the spare on the offending side and see what happens. Good luck, Gareth. 1
Dan3222 Posted August 5, 2017 Posted August 5, 2017 Good idea to put the spare on or swop the rear wheels with the fronts. See if it makes a difference. However, I do still think it's the front wheel bearing. The way that the front bearings are designed these days it's hard to tell by feeling for movement by hand. If the grumbling noise starts to become audible while you are driving straight but gets noticeably louder still when turning right then that will be the time to go back. CV joint wise, I have only every experienced issues that are very closely associated with two symptoms. If the outer CV joint is failing you will 99% of time hear a clicking sound when turning of full lock at a slow speed. If it's the inner joint deteriorating then you would 99.9% of time experience a vibration at a specific speed say 38-43mph, this is not gear specific only speed specific. Genuinely hope you get to the bottom of it soon. 1
Gavo Posted August 11, 2017 Author Posted August 11, 2017 Good Morning All, Just to give you all an update. I have taken this to a Audi/VW specialist where I can able to re create the noise. After speaking with him today he had advised it should not be there, he mentioned that it was happening while it was under load when turning, he ruled out bad tyres due to the slow speed. He thinks it may have something to do with Gearbox/clutch or drive train or diff . Surely if it was bad gearbox related then surely I would be experiencing other noises/issues (like struggling to change gears ect). I wouldn't have thought it was clutch related as the car drives fine, changes gear nice and smoothly pull when needs to no nocks or bangs when pull off fast. He also mentioned that maybe the wheel baring may have been installed incorrectly, When I changed my CV joints I did notice a little play the inner CV joints I could move it in and out slightly not too sure if this is the issue. I have booked it in for next week for a full diagnostic and hopefully we can get some idea of what this is and its bugging me now and I presume you guys too Thanks all for your advise
Gavo Posted August 16, 2017 Author Posted August 16, 2017 Good Evening All, Just got the cart back today from an Audi/VW specialist and they have looked at all the joints and confirmed they are all good. After inspecting the tyres they have confirmed that the drivers side wheel has been fitted in incorrectly (rotational backwards). They have said its a good possibility that is the issue but unable to confirm this until the tyre has been correct on the weekend. Have you guys heard of this before ? I am having new tyres and wheel tracking done this weekend if this is not the issue they have said it could be gearbox oil bad/low ?
Dan3222 Posted August 16, 2017 Posted August 16, 2017 Gavo, I have just had a quick scan through all the posts and can't see that you have had the other front wheel bearing changed. I can only recall you having one side done which was the incorrect side in relation to your description of sound production. Have you had both sides done now?
Gavo Posted August 17, 2017 Author Posted August 17, 2017 Hi Dan Yes the following has been changed so far Front Hub & Wheel Barings both sides Brakes & Disks Front & Rear Outer CV joints both sides It has been to a few places now and nobody can find the exact cause of the issue, Audi/VW specialists checked and they noticed that one of the tyres was on backwards ( rotational tyre) and they said this could be the issue so to start with the cheapest route is to have that tyre changed round to the correct way or change the opposite side. if that dose not cure the noise then that have recommended following Audi TIP ( Audi bulletin points) is to change the gearbox oil as they have described the noise as a mooing noise when turning. Just out of curiosity dose anybody know if it could be my inner CV joints causing the issue ? What symptoms would I get inner CV joints was bad
Magnet Posted August 17, 2017 Posted August 17, 2017 Hello Gavin, "Tyres? I have learnt never to ignore the simple things...." Tyre on the side with the wrong rotation direction? - Correctly fitted on the rim but just on the wrong side of the car?? Let's hope that is not contributing to the noise. Kind regards, Gareth.
Trevor Posted August 17, 2017 Posted August 17, 2017 I agree with Magnet....would put money (not real money though!) on the tyres causing the noise. Swap the fronts to the rears and see if the noise differs
Gavo Posted August 17, 2017 Author Posted August 17, 2017 Hi Both, Thanks for your advise. I need to get a new front tyre the weekend, so I will ask them to change the drivers side to the passenger side so the rotational direction of the tyre is correct. When the Wheel Barings & Hub have been changed there maybe a possibility that the wheels was put back on incorrectly. I hope this changing the tyres around and new tyre with tracking sorts the issue, I may have spent money on but at lest I know these parts are not going to need changing for while 1
cliffcoggin Posted August 17, 2017 Posted August 17, 2017 Sadly I am not convinced Gavin. You said in your first post that you swapped the wheels around and it made no difference. You also said that vibration was detectable when the wheels were in the air. To my mind that rules out tyres as a factor. You have renewed or tested all the other likely candidates, so I am stumped.
Dan3222 Posted August 17, 2017 Posted August 17, 2017 As I don't have your car I can't answer my own question here, do you know if the bearings on your car are the same as the front?
Dan3222 Posted August 17, 2017 Posted August 17, 2017 Every day is a school day, if the tyre was causing the issue I would be amazed. The main reason for the direction of rotation is for water displacement, fitted the wrong way round simply means it won't function correctly in the rain. I just can't see how a tyre could cause it. Wish I lived closer, I would come over and have a look. But that doesn't help you now though.
Gavo Posted August 17, 2017 Author Posted August 17, 2017 Thanks cliff for your message. You are correct when then wheels was in the air& on the floor when turning steering wheel u can feel movement within the spring, when the tyres was changed over this was before passenger wheel baring was changed and cv joints. Is it possible this could be gearbox related ?
Gavo Posted August 17, 2017 Author Posted August 17, 2017 Thanks Dan for your message, if I'm honest I am not convinced it is the tyre that is causing the issue. I wished someone closer lived by on this forum that they knows what there looking at as clearly I have people looking at this car that have no idea. Audi/VW specialists said it could be the issue but if not it could be bad gearbox oil/ or may need a gearbox rebuild but surely I would experience worser issues if it was the gearbox
Gavo Posted August 18, 2017 Author Posted August 18, 2017 Hi All, Further more to this issue, I can now start to hear/feel the noise when reversing and turning at the same time which makes me believe it may have something to do with my drive shafts/ inner CV joints. I am seriously thinking of taking it to Audi for them to take a look at it for them to find the problem - as I do not believe the issue lies within the Gearbox as surely I would have other issues like changing gears ect but everything runs fine on the car or I am seriously thinking of leaving it until its gets worser just concerned as I have the kids in car
