Car wont start

Popped out to the car to go to shop and she wont turn over, hoping its just the battery and not starter motor any ideas?

i now have an unsecure audi i can only lock the drivers door using the key and can not open the boot to get to the battery is there a boot release leaver i`m not seeing?

18 views not 1 comment, anyway had enough power to unlock boot and battery now out and on charge, just need to figure out now what made battery go flat

Hi Paul, only just seen this as just got home from work. Im wondering if there is a key slot hidden on the boot near to the number plate light? (I know you got in the boot now but I'm thinking for future reference)

I am somehow doubtful it's the starter motor as the battery as clearly gone flat. If there was an issue with the charging system the car would flag It on the dash. 

My gut feeling says to me it's either the battery (which would figure due to the age if the car. I bet it's on the original battery). The AA can test the functionality of the battery. 

Or it's an electrical fault that's draining the battery. I'm unsure what that electrical faylt could be though. Sorry.

Similar symptoms to mine few months ago. Battery went flat and had AA come over to get me going again. My battery was original so after 12 years it had enough lol . New one was close to £200 

if you need to charge up or start the car under the bonet on the left top side you have + and ground terminals

Ive looked in the manual and there is no mention about manual boot opening ...

Put the back seats down and try this way to put the battery back

All back up and running, will take it to local garage later to have battery checked , pic below shows the boot release button its located where the emergency triangle is kept, there is a 2" piece of plastic which pops out using a flat edge screw driver and its the white catch you need to slide across

Yep, Piotr is correct. That's the original! As I say have a look near the number plate light as I know on the jag xf it has a key slot hidden near the number plate light. Might be worth a look ;)

Glad you got sorted Paul :) as I say, think you'll need a new battery!

Hello Paul,

Varta battery is likely to indicate it is the original, and I'm with Steve on this that the battery has done its time. If so, and it needs renewing, I have used Battery Warehouse (I think) at Tewkesbury. They do good mail order deals and seem nice people to deal with- no connection and no doubt there are others.

£200 for a battery! I would have to be sitting down.

I know that feeling! And I have to agree with Gareth. £200 for a battery dies seem steep but then again the last battery I bought was for my old Ford escort lol

Update: Battery is fine, next step is to see if it happens again then back to garage and hook up to computer to see if any fault codes are given. 

i`m now thinking that may be my son who sometimes plays with the rear lights turned them on and i never noticed and over 2 days i haven`t used the car it drained the battery, at least thats what i`m hoping lol

Hello Paul,

As Steve says- fingers crossed. iF it turns out that there is a problem then If it were mine, I would be spending half an hour's time with a good auto electrician who can check whether there is any parasitic drain on the battery for you - rather than spending probably more money on plugging it into a computer. 

You've had nine years out of the battery (if original)  , and long may it continue to be trouble free, but it could be worth bearing in mind that   when it does need changing that it may be worth sticking to a battery with a minimum of 4 years guarantee, and these can often be bought just as economically as your average 3 year one if you shop around.

As a matter of interest Paul - " Battery is fine" - wondered how you had it checked .

Battery cheapest option at the moment but no way i`m buying one unless it drains again lol

@Magnet Battery was hooked up to a hand held machine which ran a test with engine on and off and with head lights on and off, was also connected to points in the engine bay

Hello Paul,

Battery test sounds like a voltmeter testing the alternator output voltage and the voltage at the battery with lights on etc. Ok, but..... the ultimate tests are if the battery is able to retain the charge which is put into it, and be able to efficiently produce the high current demand placed in it when starting  -while maintaining an acceptable voltage. 

Halfords normally carry out battery testing and are able to give you a % efficiency reading which will firmly point you to whether the battery is as serviceable as it should be. If you do eventually have it tested and if it does need replacing, you can then decide where you will get one from. 

As you say, you don't want to buy a new battery, and I wouldn't too, so let's hope it all works out in the end.

Spot on . No way a 10 year old battery will be ok .

In case it helps Paul, and his wallet, I think I might dilute the statement that "no way a 10 year old battery will be OK".  If it's an  aftermarket battery then I would most certainly agree, but if it's the original battery then it's certainly worth having it checked for serviceabiliy rather than assuming it's unserviceable.
