Morning all,

So I'm a new (used) A4 Avant owner (B8).  Loving the new levels of comfort and build quality compared to my old 8th gen Civic.  Ok the MPG isn't as advertised but hey, I was kind of expecting that.

So just one query really, just how thermally efficient are these 2.0L tdi units (143bhp)?  Mine warms up pretty well on my 30 minute commute (1.5 degrees this morning!) but didn't quite make it to 90 on the gauge. It drops when stationary and on a couple of descents on the dual carriageway, but climbs when cruising at 60mph as expected.  Could I have a flakey thermostat?

Cheers all, Jon

Hi Jonathan....welcome to the Forum

Good to have you onboard

I would check the wiring to the plug on the coolant sensor as this tends to be responsible for a vague temp gauge

Where abouts can I find this sensor Trevor?

Thanks

Also is this purely a sensor for the gauge or does the engine utilise this reading too for engine management?

should be on top of the thermostat area/cylinder head area (sure its above the starter motor or oil filter housing) will have a two or three wire connection going to it

Thanks Trevor.

I'll have a look and check the connections. To be fair, it's in very good order under the bonnet.
