  1. Hi anything such as steering knuckles are always reusable as there is virtually nothing to wear them, anything with a rubber bush or ball joint is suspect second hand, with regard to the other bearing I would personally change it as if you start with two new bearings they wear as a pair, its false economy to change just one as if its sister bearing is noisy its safe to assume it won't be long before that one is knackered as well. Just torque the bolts to specified nm and leaves at that. Regards Steve

  2. Thanks Gareth for your replay. Now that i am reading my own question, i don't understand what i meant sorry for confusion. I was pretty sure the bearing has excessive play out of tolerance but then I wanted to be sure as i don't own this car long, thought maybe its normal play on the new models i still went with my gut feeling and replaced the bearing on drivers side, it made huge difference more confined steer feeling even though the car has only 80kmiles the bearing was guessed, going to replace the passenger side tomorrow too, checking other sites they do suggest to change them 75k to 100k, there was no indication of how the car was handling and no sign or noise of wear of the bearing but as you can see in video the bearing was gone. I had to get a strut brace from scrap yard and the buddy gave me the whole kit with arms and all i took of the bearing of the scrap strut and it had exact same play on the bearing as my one thats why i was comparing two old bearings as the old strut on my car pinch bolt was stuck in i didnt bother trying to get it out instead i went and replaced it with another one from scrap. Thinking of replacing the rear bearings as well but ill leave that for another time Thanks

  3. Hello Arjan, Thanks for being in touch with the forum. I must admit that I’m having a little difficulty in understanding the questioning here - it’s probably me. As I see it, you have two used bearing assemblies (why two? - or have I got it wrong) ) and to me, both exhibit wear, so it’s difficult to establish why you are comparing 2 used ones, rather than trying to compare one used one with one new one? Perhaps you could fill in some extra detail. Kind regards, Gareth.

  4. It gets better... Looking at my tyres I noticed more wear on the outside of the passenger side wheel - enough to get me a warning from the local constabulary, should I be stopped. So, I knew new tyres were due this year, I forked out on a full set of Michelin's (more later). While in the tyre depot, the owner checked out the bearing, and the caliper for play, he gave the whole thing a blast from the compressor too. No play on bearing, no tell-tale marks on the disk, no play in half-shaft - that he could see or feel. New wheels on - drive home - c.20 miles. Decide to brake a lot and take corners 'well'. Then slowed down to 20 in the villages (it's the new speed limit in Borders - the Audi hates it!) and NO howl - 20 was the speed it usually kicked in at. To double check, I drove into England...to Berwick for my shopping. No howl in the town. There is still a judder on braking though, so it was agreed by pal in Glasgow and at the tyre depot, that it could be uneven wear on the pads - the wheel alignment was out, and it's all corrected now. So we shall see. A set of pads is a lot cheaper than a caliper. The tyres - I know I asked ages ago. I have Pirelli on when I got the car - but these Michelin Pilot Sport are excellent for noise and grip. Mainly a summer tyre it seems, but so far so good. Let's wait and see if it's the pads then!

  5. Hello Richard, Really sorry to hear of your very unfortunate accident, but reassured to know that you have survived relatively unscathed. With regard to the airbags not having deployed in this accident, to me, points to something being wrong in your particular car’s SRS system, rather than as a result of poor build design by Audi. Of course, we cannot comment on why the airbags didn’t deploy in this case, and I think you would need to have the car inspected by accident specialists to determine why. Just wondering how long have you owned this car, what you know of its history, whether the SRS system light has alway come on when you switch the ignition on (as of course it should do) and then goes out within about 30 seconds - again as it should do. These two functions are critical, as the car monitors the full system to unsure that it is operational when needed. Perhaps you could let us know Richard. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Kind regards, Gareth.
