Instrument cluster problems happen from time to time on A3s of that era. A new cluster from Audi will cost you silly money, whereas the old cluster can be repaired by companies such as ECU Testing for less than £300. You will have to remove, post, and refit the cluster if you choose to have it repaired. Scan through this forum's history for examples of people in a similar position who have had their clusters repaired successfully.3 points

Following are the Types of Car Exhaust Smoke: 1. Black Smoke Black smoke indicates that the engine is burning too much fuel, a condition known as running rich. This can be caused by several factors that disrupt the air-fuel mixture. 2. White Smoke It usually means that coolant is being burned in the engine, which means that something is drastically wrong. The most common cause of this is a blown head gasket, which can quickly lead to an overheating engine. 3. Blue Smoke Blue smoke is a clear sign that your engine is burning oil. The liquid can leak into the combustion chamber where it is burned along with fuel. You'll probably notice your car misfiring when you turn the keys in your ignition, or find your vehicle shakes more than usual when idle. 4. Grey Smoke If the smoke from the exhaust pipe is either grey or bluish-tinged, it generally means that your engine is burning oil inside the combustion chamber. Burning oil could be due to many causes, from leaky valve seals to bad piston rings.2 points

That is not a problem I was aware of, but I trust Steve's experience. You have little to lose by changing the hoses and fluid. It would be cheaper than changing discs so often.1 point

i think steve is right,a friend of mine had the same sympoms as you and it was the control unit that needed replacing,it was under the carpet behind the drivers seat.Greg1 point

Hi is it both sides?, most common cause of this is the callipers not releasing fully due to the rubber hoses that run from the metal pipe to the calliper collapsing and not allowing all the fluid to return properly, this phenomenon is usually caused by lack of brake fluid changes, brake fluid is hydroscopic and absorbes water which in turn rots out just about everything in the braking system, calliper cylinders, brake hoses being the prime target. Yeah. Wish I could pay someone that speaks matrix locally to assist me lol. Gonna try something shortly. If that fails I'll put the cruise control on hold for a while and put the basic stalks back in1 point

That's a risky assumption. Considering that a defective battery can lead to the sort of faults the car is showing I suggest you get it professionally tested, because a simple voltage test under negligible electrical load will not reveal the real condition of the battery.1 point

I would now suggest you get this car inspected ASAPat an independent. Kind regards, Gareth.1 point

Chaps, I have changed my A4Avant for a Q5, so no longer need the space saver that I bought for the A4. It does fit into the wheel well, & it works with the larger diameter alloys. Mine was on 19's. It's available with the jack for £75 to anybody who's interested. It has been used, just the once, for about 15 miles. I would need to be collection only. I'm located near Kingston, Surrey. Please message me if interested.1 point

Yup that’s exactly what happened to me. Welcome to the alternator club officially. Hoping they get things sorted for us with no headache.1 point

There should be a date on the battery in theory. But change fronts and see if that resolved the issue1 point

Hi to all who read this, Firstly for clarity, the rear hubs on front wheel drives don't have the big 19mm hex bolt as there is no drive shaft. To report back on the problem, I've just finished swapping out my N/S rear hub assembly & ABS sensor. Access was good, the spline head bolts after cleaning were relatively easy to remove & the whole job was fairly simple. Surprisingly there was alot of aluminium corrosion between the aluminium hub carrier & old steel hub but with a small amount of hammering from behind it dropped off. A drill attached wire brush made light work of it. A light smearing of ceramic grease & the new hub popped back in easily. The sensor bore hole needed extra sanding to clean the corrosion but all in all a simple job really. Just like all the comments made by many it did cure the 3 issues that caused my dash to light up like a Christmas tree. Traction Control light - gone Headlight beam adjustment light - gone EPB issue light - gone EPB now works as it should1 point

I changed a wheel on my A3 several years ago after hitting a pothole and damaging one. No issue with TPMS. As far as I am aware, VAG don't use sensors in the wheels. There are magnetic rings on the wheel hubs with pick up sensors positioned next to them. Rotational values are stored and any changes at one or more wheels indicates a possible pressure difference, ie a puncture. It's the same setup for the TPMS on my Skoda Octavia VRS.1 point

Hello People, this started a few days ago when I noticed that the clock wasn't changing and displaying the correct time. I tried changing the time as I normally would, but to no avail. Fast forward to today and I have a complete instrument failure. No Speedo or rev counter, no fuel or temp gauges, and no dash information at all - i.e. gear selection and the usual dashboard wording. That said, all the warning lights do come on and do out as they should once the engine is running, and i do have left and right indicator lights. Would anyone have any idea as to what's happened? I've contacted my local Audi dealer who has given me a part number for a complete new instrument cluster however they can no longer supply this as Audi no longer make this particular part as of 2022. Any help that can be offered would be greatly appreciated before I contact my garage tomorrow.0 points
