  1. Did the autoelectrician check any fuses other than those in the engine bay? There's a second set of fuses on the drivers side edge of the dashboard (it's not near the steering wheel). If it's not been checked, would recommend checking all of them before investing in the individual parts. I've had a similar issue where the glow plugs, ABS and engine management lights were on simultaneously due to a blown fuse in that driver's side set.
  2. My pleasure. If it ain't broke, don't fix it (had to learn that the hard way). A service regen isn't risk free as there's been occasional stories of service regens melting the DPF. If the car is not causing issues, drive happily and worry free; let the ECU worry about the active regens as it should. Long distance driving will allow for passive regen.
  3. DPF regen is triggered when a certain pressure is reached across the DPF as monitored by the differential pressure sensor (basically, the higher the soot and ash content, the higher the pressure). From personal experience, once the threshold pressure is reached, it can be triggered at any engine temperature but only once a certain speed is reached (not sure what speed but the threshold is definitely between 15-30mph). You'll be able to tell that the car is undergoing a regen if the idle RPMs are stuck at 1000 and, if the car is below operating temp, you'll notice the engine temperature increasing to operating very quickly.
  4. Hi Cheryl, The anti-shudder valve (I assume that's what you mean by throttle actuator sensor?) needs adapting once replaced or cleaned as Clifford and Steve mentioned. There is probably someone with VCDS in your area who can do the adaptation. Diesel cars technically don't have a throttle body as they work differently to petrols; the purpose of the valve is to stop the engine from shaking when turning it off rather than to let the car accelerate. Bear in mind, some anti-shudder valves need to just be cleaned and not replaced (the part is pricey). As for whether the valve is easy to replace, it depends on how mechanically minded you are and whether you can get the intake pipe off!
  5. Hi Roshan, Did you manage to get an answer to this? My understanding of diesel leak-off tests is that they are not about the actual volume of diesel in the bottles but how quickly it fills up, so it wouldn't be possible to comment with a picture without a timeframe (mind you, I don't know the answer). The symptoms you describe sound like bad injectors, though. I assume you are getting a warning light? Do you have a diagnostic tool, ideally VCDS? Live data can tell you what the injector deviation is of all 4 and likely give you the bad injector (a rule of thumb is if the deviation is above 1, then the injector is going bad).

  7. Hi all, A little update. Went to Audi yesterday, argued my case and managed to get a refund for incorrect diagnosis and also got the car booked in with another dealer to look into the thermostat as it is still under warranty (turns out the one I went to is closing down after today). Thanks for your help and input!
  8. Hi Gareth, thanks for your response. Shockingly, it was an actual technician. I was not happy as you can imagine as it was not how the car operated prior but they insisted so I got them to put it in writing that fluctuating temps between 50 and 90C is "normal". Now in winter, the temp gauge rarely hits 90C; I was driving at 70mph yesterday and VCDS showed a maximum coolant temp of 85C, even though the thermostat is meant to open at 92C from my understanding. From a cold start, the coolant temp at the EGR cooler/radiator outlet started to increase well before the engine coolant temp reached 92C as per my data log. Am I correct in thinking that these symptoms suggest the thermostat is stuck open? I'll be going to Audi tomorrow to raise a complaint and get them to honour their own warranty. On a separate note, do you know what the normal fuel temp reading should be in the car once warmed up? I also logged that yesterday for a separate issue and as below, it did not reach more than 14C (ambient temp was 9C).
  9. Hi Clifford, thanks for the response! That was my experience with the original thermostat that the temp should be steady at 90; I didn't think Audi were correct but they insisted the info was correct as it is what Audi Technical provided (some kind of proprietary diagnostic software I believe?). Given that they falsely charged me their diagnostic fee and with the stat under warranty still, I want to go back to them to get a refund and get it replaced. Before doing so though, I wanted to be certain that my provided data log is sufficient evidence of the stat being stuck open so they do not rip me off again. Would you say it is? Also, were you able to have a look at the fuel temp sensor data log? What are your thoughts on it?

Initially, the revs would fluctuate between 800 and 1000 at which point I changed the coolant temperature sensors and it mostly resolved. Since then, the revs remain the same, however, shaking can be felt through the seats at times. There is also reduced fuel economy. I have changed the MAF sensor, lambda sensor and the engine/gearbox mounts and the shaking has been improved but still noticeable at times. The car has no warning lights. When scanning with VCDS, no codes come up. I have performed the following tests/logs: Fuel high pressure - specified and actual are similar in the log Charge boost pressure - specified and actual are similar in the log EGR - specified and actual are similar in the log (also performed automatic EGR test in Basic Settings which passed) MAF plausibility test (though was replaced earlier this year as it went faulty) - passed Injector quantity deviation - values for all 4 injectors are < 1 I came across a forum suggesting a bad fuel temp sensor so logged it as above and the temp was in the 10-15C range (ambient temp was 9C) despite the engine being warm. Am I correct in thinking the sensor is bad? Could the sensor be causing these symptoms? Bad Thermostat Last year, I bought a genuine Audi thermostat and had it fitted. All was okay initially. For several months now, the coolant temperature has fluctuated between 50C and 90C. I took it to Audi to have it checked (the part has a 2 year warranty) and after they took the car for a test drive, they simply said that fluctuating coolant temperatures are normal and charged me their exorbitant diagnostic fee. With the cold days here, the car struggles to reach 90C on the dash and after this bad experience with Audi, I logged the coolant temps during a mix of motorway and town driving. The coolant temperature in the pipe from the EGR increases even before the engine coolant temperature has reached 90C, suggesting the thermostat is stuck open. Am I right in thinking this? If so, would the log be enough evidence to raise a complaint with Audi, demand a refund and replace the thermostat under warranty? Thanks in advance!
  11. Hi all! I have a 2010 Audi A3 8P 1.6 TDI. For a few months now, the car has been bugging me with an intermittent rough idle (no fluctuating revs, just mild shaking that can be felt through the seats). Additionally, the car seems to be actively regenerating every week which is new for me (however, I used to commute long journeys which I no longer do, now it is mainly city driving with fortnightly/monthly long journeys approximately). There are no fault codes, no additional engine noise as far as I can tell and no loss of power. Both coolant temp. sensors were changed Apr 2024, MAF changed in Jan 2024 and the timing belt in Apr 2023. The car was serviced last month (incl. air filter and fuel filter). I suspect the lambda sensor is going. As far as I am aware, the sensor is the original and has never been changed.   12. Hi Gareth, Euro Car Parts and GSF have no steering knuckles, unfortunately. Motor Parts Direct said that steering knuckles should be obtained from the dealer but as initially mentioned, the dealer is out of budget. That leaves me with: Helicoil the thread Buying an aftermarket knuckle online from brands I am not sure about via steeringknuckle.com or Autodoc Buying a knuckle from breakers (have looked into this, many are very rusted) I prefer helicoiling just because I know there is nothing wrong with the integrity of the knuckle itself, the issue is finding someone happy to do it.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to find a knuckle from an aftermarket company which I have previously used or even heard of. I can only seem to find it from the place I linked or other companies on Autodoc which, like I mentioned, is only selling parts from manufacturers I have never come across before like Ridex. Steve, I have looked at helicoiling on the forums, can't seem to find a definitive answer on whether it is safe. For day-to-day driving, I assume it is given your recommendation? There's a cheap one on eBay for £10-£15 unbranded (link). Again, I assume branding does not matter when it comes to this? Should threadlocker be used as well? In all honesty, as a new DIYer, I'm scared to helicoil myself just in case I don't drill square into the hole and then ruin the whole thread.
  15. Hi all, I have an Audi A3 2010 8PA 1.6TDI. Did a brake job and mistakenly overtightened one of the threads of the brake carrier causing it to partly strip! It doesn't help that the brake carrier is integrated into the steering knuckle. Not sure where to go from here 😞 . The 2 options I can think of are: Repair the thread - contacted Brake Caliper Refurbs who were happy to try but are asking for the part off the car so I won't be able to drive it for some time (not ideal and the garage I trust are not able to do it as they only have 1 lift) Replace the steering knuckle - I have found an aftermarket knuckle from Select Automotive for a decent price but unsure of the quality, I have asked Audi for OE price and they are charging an arm and a leg What are your thoughts on aftermarket steering knuckles? I'm open to repairing the thread instead but hesitant to do it myself. Any help would be much appreciated!
