Thanks for the info. Surprisingly the garage is going to weld it to repair, but I'm going to try and get a good subframe for future use as the repair won't last too long I imagjne.

Is this the type I need, with no brackets on the inner edges (facing the middle)?

I have a 2004 B6 1.9TDI Avant, Manual gearbox 5 speed with a rotting front subframe. Am I right in saying the front subframe I need can be from a B7 or B6? It's quite confusing, as I've heard they are all the same, but then hear it depends on the gearbox mountings? On searching there are differences in some of the brackets. Does any one have a photo of the type I need? Some frames have semi-circular brackets facing the middle, some don't. I can't look on the car at the moment as it's elsewhere..... Really appreciate any help.
