Would i have to take the part back out to get the new unit number?

Hi, I'm in desperate need of some help! After having problem with my Indicator Wiper Light Stalks Comms Unit. I decided to change the part, which i did without much difficulty. A guy i know, who has the correct tools, advised me he could reprogram the new part to clear any fault lights that would appear after the change. I asked him if he needed anything to which he advised me 'just the car and the new part'. When i took the car to him, he asked me for the old part - a part which i had now thrown away as scrap! He now advises me he needs the old part to be able to reprogram the new part! Which sort of leaves up a creek without a paddle. Is there any way to work around this please? Thanks in advance. RizlaUk
