  1. A3 2.0 lt TDi 8P Sportback 2005 – Engine BKD, 75,000 miles. RHD-UK My first post but I hope this saga will be is some use and perhaps someone may be able to answer my questions regarding VCDS and Throttle Body Alignment that appear at the end. The engine management instrument warning light illuminated but there were no apparent problems with the engine running, either starting/stopping or while driving. After using a basic OBDP dongle and the Android app ‘Torq’, the throttle body was throwing up errors. I removed the throttle body to investigate. Removal was a fairly straightforward task and after removing the protective casing, it could be seen (see photo) that the plastic teeth were broken at the extreme end of the gear. Additionally, the flapper valve was stuck in the fully open setting. I could not believe that such a component was manufactured from plastic and surely it would be only a matter of time before the teeth failed. I attempted to fix the missing teeth by drilling two small holes in the plastic and inserting a ‘U’ shaped piece of wire to form a new tooth. When the motor originally seized, it blew the 10 Amp fuse that is located engine bay fuse box. (see http://bit.ly/2CNdqrB) (Not my video). My fix was successful, but only for a few engine starts. Not wanting to waste any more time , I bought a new throttle body for about £70 and installed this. In the meantime, I bought 2017 Hex CAN interface with VCDS Ver 17.8 that would allow me to re-set the error codes and perform a throttle body alignment (TBA) for this new item. The Throttle Body (when fitted) was in the fully open position so I was not concerned about running the engine to ensure that battery voltage and coolant temperature were up to spec prior to performing the TBA. According to various sources, the TBA was a simple procedure. However, after entering the VCDS, 01- Engine, 04 Basic Settings, Block 060 I had ERROR. Also, the TBA was not in the drop down list in Adaption section. I then consulted an experienced mechanic and he checked with an earlier version of VCDS and also the SNAP-ON program used. All programs did not allow access to the TBA procedure (or we could not find it). I am beginning to wonder if the throttle body is in fact a ‘inlet manifold flap’ that closes when the engine stops (to prevent run-on) and then merely opens again when you start the car and it does not require ‘alignment’ ???? So my question is this ; does the 2.0 lt BKD engine require a TBA, and if it does, how is it done with VCDS 17.8 version 17.8 ? Thanks for sticking with me. Any advice appreciated. Richard
